A Sign of the Times--Siemens to Layoff 17,000 Workers

Siemens, the Germany engineering, electronic and healthcare company is planning to layoff more than 17,000 workers worldwide.  Although primarily known for its engineering and electronic products like cellphones, Siemans has a large healthcare practice primarily in medical devices and diagnostics. A good portion of the layoffs are likely to take place in Germany and elsewhere in Europe.

The loss of this many jobs at one of the world's largest and most reputable companies may unfortuantely be a harbinger of things to come.

Sequencing the "Chocolate" (Cocoa) Genome

In case you didn’t know, chocolate is big business. Do you know of anybody who doesn’t like to snack on a piece of chocolate from time to time? Because of the growing incidence of tropical diseases, pests and global climate change, Mars, the giant candy maker (M&Ms, Snickers), announced that it will sequence and analyze the cocoa genome (cocoa is the key ingredient in chocolate) to “to discover genetic building blocks of traits like disease and pest resistance, drought tolerance and perhaps flavor.” The likely long term goals of the project are to identify ways reduce cultivation costs and increase crop yields.

Another reason why Mars is keen on the project (at least according to the corporate press release) is to protect the livelihood of more than 6.5 million cocoa growers, mostly family-run farms,70% of which are in Africa. 

Mars is working with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA, sequencing) and IBM (data analysis) on the project. The results of the research will be free through the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture.

I hope that the cocoa genome project is successful. What would the world be like without a copious supply of chocolate?????

In Case You Were Wondering....Federal Research Funding for the Life Sciences Will Remain Flat

For the past 60 years, American science was second to none. However, the US is perilously close to losing that distinction. Put simply, American science, like its economy, is in free fall.

Federal funding, primarily through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is the lifeblood of American life sciences research. Between 1998 and 2003, the federal government doubled NIH’s budget every year—almost 25% of all grant applications were funded and life was good! However, since 2003, budget increases have vanished and the NIH remains trapped in a five year run of flat funding. Research funding rates have fallen to 10% or less and many academic scientists are voluntarily leaving or being forced out of their jobs.

This is not the first time that funding levels have plummeted. From 1989 to about 1994 (when I was a tenure track Assistant Professor), funding rates fell from about 20% to less than 10%. However, back then, there was little global research competition and American was able to recover to retain its scientific dominance. However, the world is a very different place now and the supremacy of American science, particularly in the life sciences, is clearly at risk.

According to an article in the Trenton Times, (my local paper), science and engineering have accounted for close to half of the growth in the American economy since World War II. Analysts suggest that without adequate research funding and ready access to research grants fewer scientists will enter the profession. “Already Asian countries are graduating 10 times the number of scientists and engineers as the United States. If the current trends continue in about a decade 90% of the world’s scientists and engineers will be in Asia” According to Elias Zerhouni, current director of NIH “In 10 to 15 years we’ll have scientists older than 65 than those younger than 35. This is not a sustainable trend in biomedical research.” Unless federal funding for research is increased this ominous trend will continue. That said, it may be too little too late. As you all know, finding science jobs in the US these days is becoming increasingly difficult even for qualified applicants. With this in mind, one of the most well attended talks that I give at career development symposia is entitled “The Road Less Traveled: Alternate Career Paths for Life Scientists”. As much as I hate to admit it, traditional career pathways for most life scientists may be things of the past.

Life Sciences Patent Factoid

According to a survey of 1,800 American professors in the life sciences conducted by economists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, 90% of life sicentiest hold only one or no patents.  This means that  remaining 10% hold more than one (and are probably weathier than the other guys). 

The results of the study led its authors to surmise that despite the recent explosion in patenting in the life sciences, a majority of academics still do research the "old-fashioned way"--by winning federal research grants, publishing in scientific journals and training PhD and postdoctoral students.  Yeah right--I bet many of the old-fashioned folks wish they had patents and were able to start biotechnology companies!!!!

Home Brewing DNA

Have you ever felt like mixing up a few batches of DNA in your  spare time? Well, for those of you who sometimes get the urge I found an easy-to-use recipe to make your own custom designed DNA sequences. Of course I was joking about doing it at home but if you happen to be at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Biotechnology Center you can give it a whirl.

Of course, the ability to build DNA sequences nucleotide-by-nucleotide has been available for over a decade or more.  That said, the relatively simple system devised by scientists at the UW Biotechnology Center allows even the neophyte molecular biologist to do it successfully.

The Changing World of Interviewing

With the price of gas and travel skyrocketing, many companies are cutting back on the number of face-to-face job interviews that they conduct. Instead, companies are resorting to alternate interviewing strategies that include multiple phone interviews, videoconferencing interviews and yes, even virtual interviews (check out Second Life) —how cool is that!!!! 

This means that job candidates must adapt to these new format in order to remain competitive. I came across an article that discusses how to approach and successfully manage these new interviewing formats.

Just remember to keep those wings and halos to a minimum during your next virtual interview!!!!

BMS Rumors Persist

According to a post over at Pharmalot, BMS may be positioning itself for sale or readying itself as a potential M&A target.   

Although BMS has been rumored for years to be a takeover target, the impending loss of revenues generated by its anticlotting drug Plavix (co-marketed with Sanofi-Aventis) due to patent expiry in 2011 is wreaking havoc at the company.  As much as 50% of BMS’s revenue is generated by the Plavix franchise. The impending loss of Plavix suggests that thing must drastically change at the company in order for it to remain independent.

Time will sell….I mean tell....!!!!!

News Flash: Congressional Budget Report Shows that Biogenerics Will Save $25 Billion on Biologics Spending in the US

Just when you thought the obvious couldn’t be anymore obvious to US lawmakers, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) today released a long-awaited assessment of the cost of a biogenerics bill and found that the legislation, if enacted, would reduce total expenditures on biologics in the US by $25 billion over the next decade—duh!!!  

According to a post over at Pharmalot, “The report comes as a growing group of drugmakers, insurers and employers agitate over the high cost of biologics, which may only be rectified if Congress passes legislation that would give the FDA guidance on creating a so-called pathway to approve biogenerics, or follow-on biologics. Two House bills have been proposed that are similar to the Senate bill reviewed by the CBO, although the looming summer recess and election-year politics suggest passage may not occur this year.”

Unfortunately, as I suggested in a previous post, the bills currently under consideration are flawed and would give unwarranted patent exclusivity to innovator companies if enacted. Nevertheless, as Kathleen Jaeger, head of the GPHA (a generic manufacturing trade group) aptly stated “We are still reviewing the analysis, but we are pleased that CBO agrees that significant savings will be achieved by bringing biogeneric medicines to consumers and that even greater savings will result from removing harmful barriers to access, including brand evergreening and unprecedented market exclusivity provisions. With Americans growing increasingly concerned about health care costs, we should be increasing access to affordable medicines while fostering competition in the pharmaceutical marketplace. “

By the time that a US approval pathway for biogenerics is divined, European and Asian biogeneric manufacturers will already control the market and the “new” (what took you so long) American legislation will provide little financial incentive for US companies to enter the biogenerics market space.

The Neurobiology of Sarcasm

Having been called a “smartass” most of my life, I found a recent post entitled the “Science of Sarcasm” by Karen Ventii (who runs the Science to Life Blog) fascinating. After reading it, I have yet to figure out why I am a smartass, but at least I know what part of the brain may be responsible! This is what Karen wrote:

A new study aimed at confirming the region of the brain that is important in detecting sarcasm may open the door for new diagnostic tools in detecting mental illness, according to an article in The New York Times.

Study leader Katherine P. Rankin, a neuropsychologist and assistant professor in the Memory and Aging Center at the University of California, San Francisco, used MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) technology and a language test to highlight the region of the brain where the ability to detect sarcasm resides.

The findings, which were presented at the American Academy of Neurology's annual meeting, showed that the 'sarcasm center' is located in the right parahippocampal gyrus.

So, why is this research important?

The ability to perceive sarcasm is linked to one of the most important aspects of human social relations: the ability to figure out what others are thinking. This ability to detect sarcasm is characteristically lost very early during the course of frontotemporal dementia. To date, early detection of this type of dementia has been difficult because afflicted individuals can still perform perfectly well on traditional neuropsychological tests early on in their disease. Therefore, studies like this could help neurologists develop new tools to diagnose and track the early stages of this illness.

During the study, researchers used linguistic cues to localize the sarcasm detection region to the right hemisphere. This is interesting because the brain's language and social interaction centers were previously thought to be located on the left side while the right was known to specialize in a visual context.

This led researchers to propose new functions for the right side of the brain. "It's now thought that the appreciation of humor and language that is not literal, puns and jokes, requires the right hemisphere," said Dr. Anjan Chatterjee, an associate professor in the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Pennsylvania.

This current study corroborates previous findings suggesting that the front and right regions of the brain work together to comprehend sarcasm.

And the Award for the Pharma/Biotech Company that Spent the Most Money Lobbying Congress in 2007 Goes to....

Last year was a banner year for the pharmaceutical lobby (the largest in Washington DC). It spent over $168 million to inform Congress about issues that its members thought were in the best interest of the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. So what were the main issues that occupied a majority of the lobby’s time?

  • blocking the importation of inexpensive drugs from other countries
  • protecting pharmaceutical patents both within the United States and abroad
  • ensuring greater market access for pharmaceutical companies in international free trade agreements

You are probably wondering which company was the top spender—it was Amgen! As you may recall, Amgen’s EPO franchise was under intense medical, regulatory and congressional scrutiny because of safety issue that resulted from over prescription. In my limited understanding of how things work in Washington, I have been told by lobbyist friends of mine that there is no better way to solve nagging problems than by paying influence peddlers to make them go away.  That said, Amgen’s lobbying costs paled in comparison with the $23 million spent by Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America a pharmaceutical industry trade group.  You Go PhRMA!!!!

A quick perusal of the top lobbying list reveals that all major US pharmaceutical companies invested heavily to influence members of Congress to allow them to preserve their stranglehold on the American healthcare system. Not surprisingly, all of the major foreign pharmaceutical manufacturers were also on list.  Much to my surprise, Teva, the Israeli generic manufacturing giant made the list this year—so it goes!

I guess altruism is out and avarice is still in! Hat tip to Pharmalot.

British Biotech is taking a Beating

Despite a recent report heralding the ascendancy of the Welsh biotechnology industry, the majority of biotech companies in Britain are in danger of fading away according to a report in London's  Financial Times. According to the Times; “Over the past year the sector has witnessed a string of high-profile drug failures, share prices have plunged and there have been almost no public listings. The sector is shrinking as private biotech companies are bought by cash-rich pharmaceutical companies, most of which are based abroad”.

“The quality of British science has never been in question. Commercial biotech’s perennial problem, say the pundits, is instead a lack of financing, management expertise and commercial savvy. “The UK has always labored under the yoke of not having enough venture capital around and not having the people prepared to take risks” said one analyst.” Nevertheless, the UK is currently  responsible for more than one-third of the European Union’s total drug pipeline.

The British biotechnology industry isn’t alone. Consolidation of the US biotechnology industry has been quietly going on for the past 5-10 years. Many successful American companies have been acquired by major pharmaceutical companies. For example, MedImmune and Millennium Pharmaceuticals were recently purchased by Astra Zeneca and Takeda Pharmaceuticals respectively. That said, I don’t think that what is happening in the UK is unique to the British biotech industry. The bottom line is this; Biotech is a capital-intensive, briskly paced, risky business that is, at most, 35 years old. More companies than not are expected to fail. Pharma, on the other hand, is a conservative and experienced cash-rich industry that is over 100 years old. Therefore, it follows that pharma companies, when possible, will buy successful biotech companies to bolster their thinning pipelines to stabilize their stock prices.

In my opinion, the seminal underpinning and essence of the biotech industry is to harness scientific originality to create innovative l technologies and products. That said, I believe that the biotechnology industry has finally become an integral part of the life sciences ecological food chain (think of biotech as a producer and pharma as a consumer).  I can’t think of many biotechnologies company executives (with the exception of Biogen) that wouldn’t consider acquisition or merger with a major pharmaceutical company as an ideal exit strategy for their stakeholders!

Some Tips to Reduce the Incidence of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

A friend of mine accidentally gashed his leg on an open dishwasher door and thought nothing of it for several weeks until he noticed that the wound wasn’t healing and it hurt really badly. He eventually went to the emergency room at a local, where the ER docs cultured the wound and sent him home with a prescription for oral antibiotics. The antibiotics stopped working several days later and he wound up in another local hospital–this time he was admitted and the spent the next 5 days on a variety of intravenous antibiotics. Despite the treatment (they could not find the right antibiotic combination at first because  they never recultured the wound) his leg turned black from his ankle to his knee and they almost had to amputate. He is back at home now and will be treated with a regimen of iv antibiotics for the next 6 weeks or so. I talked with him last week and I learned that his leg wound is still not completely healed and the infectious disease docs are worried!

My friend almost lost his leg because of a lack of understanding about bacterial infections and antibiotic resistant bacteria and— unfortunately— because of substandard wound care treatment. With this in mind, I am posting what I think are useful tips (from the June issue of the Mayo Clinic Women’s Health Source) about how to prevent, manage and treat wound infections to minimize the emergence and spread of multiple, antibiotic- resistant bacteria.

  • Wash your hands: This simple procedure, done properly, remains the best defense. Carry alcohol-based hand sanitizers for times when hand washing isn’t possible.
  • Keep personal items personal: Don’t share towels, soap, sheets, razors, clothing or athletic equipment.
  • Sanitize linens: If you have a cut or abrasion, wash towels and sheets with hot water and added bleach. Wash gym and athletic clothes after each use.
  • Get infections tested: If an infection requires treatment, ask your care provider to take a culture to confirm what bacteria are present before you are given an antibiotic. (Editor’s note: Unfortunately, this is no longer standard practice—most infections are treated empirically which is partly responsible for the increasing frequency of antibiotic resistant bacteria.) If you test positive for a Staphylococcus (Staph) infection, ask that a culture be tested specifically for MRSA in case you need a special antibiotic.
  • Use antibiotics appropriately: When you take antibiotics, take all doses even when you start feeling better. Don’t demand antibiotics for viral illnesses; antibiotics don’t work with viruses. Taking too many antibiotics over time could become a detriment because the medication’s effectiveness can be compromised by overuse.
  • Use antibacterial products sparingly: Antibacterial soaps and cleaning products probably don’t prevent infections at home and may make these products less effective in hospitals.
  • Take precautions in the hospital: Ask all hospital staff and visitors to wash their hands or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer before touching you. Ask care providers to wipe stethoscopes and other equipment with alcohol. Don’t set food or utensils directly on tables or beds. Make sure that intravenous tubes and catheters are inserted under sterile conditions.

I hope that these tips will help to keep you out of the hospital with potentially life-threatening, antibiotic resistant bacterial wound infections!

Red Yeast Rice Follow-Up

I want to thank Emily who sent me the following comment about red yeast rice.

"Red yeast rice is rice that has been fermented by the red yeast, Monascus purpureus. It has been used by the Chinese for many centuries as a food preservative, food colorant (it is responsible for the red color of Peking duck), spice, and ingredient in rice wine." Based on this information, I clearly had eaten some red yeast rice during my recent trip to China.

My friends and I ate Peking Duck in a restaurant in Beijing (recommended by a Chines chef ) that is  famous for it--I even have a certificate that indicates the number of the duck that we ate--the restaurant keeps track of every duck that it has served for the past 50 years or so!  That said, I doubt that the amount of red yeast rice used to prepare Peking Duck is not enough to counteract the negative effects of duck fat on cardiovascular health.  Nevertheless, my knowledge of its positive effects on the cardiovascular system will help to assuage some of the health concerns that I may have the next time I order Peking Duck in my favorite Chinese restaurant.

Icahn Thwarted in Attempt to Gain Control of Biogen IDEC Board

Chalk up one for the good guys (good is a relative term). Carl Icahn has given up on his quest to gain control of the Cambridge-based biotechnology giant, Biogen/IDEC. Actually, he was forced to give up because the slate of board members that he hoped would be elected to the Biogen/IDEC board failed to gain shareholder support and lost its bid for the board at a recent shareholder meeting.

Icahn, who owns about 4% of outstanding shares of the company, wanted to gain control of the Biogen/IDEC board so that he could force the company to try once again to sell itself to a large pharmaceutical company (rather than remain independent). As you may recall, the company tried to sell itself late last year but failed to find any buyers. Icahn accused the company of not trying hard enough! Give it a break Carl…its not always about you!

Despite the fact that Carl has his name on a molecular biology building at Princeton University (he is an alumnus), he knows very little about the biotechnology business. My advice to him is to raid companies that make commodities that he knows something about—widgets, plastics, automobiles — maybe even oil.

Pfizer and Ranbaxy Settle Lipitor Patent Dispute

As many of you may know, Ranbaxy was involved in a bitter patent dispute with Pfizer over Lipitor, Pfizer’s blockbuster multibillion, dollar anti LDL-cholesterol drug. Ranbaxy was challenging the validity of Pfizer’s intellectual property estate for Lipitor which would have extended patent protection for the drug until 2013 or longer. The patent dispute began after Ranbaxy filled an ANDA with the US Food and Drug Administration to sell generic Lipitor after uncontested Lipitor patents expire in early 2010.

Conventional wisdom suggested that Pfizer would ultimately lose the patent dispute and that Ranbaxy would be able to immediately flood the market with a much cheaper generic version of Lipitor. This would have an enormous negative impact on Pfizer’s financial stability and its future (Lipitor had $12.8 billion in sales in 2007). Nevertheless, untilDaiicho-Sankyo announced its intention to acquire Ranbaxy last week, Pfizer was willing to gamble and run the risk of losing the lawsuit. Apparently, Ranbaxy impending sale was enough of an impetus for Pfizer to settle the patent dispute which has grown increasingly acrimonious over the past year or so.

According to agreement (which needs to be approved by the US Federal Trade Commission), Pfizer was able to get Ranbaxy  to agree to delay the release of generic Lipitor until November 2011 — up to 20 months later than many analysts had been expecting (some insiders believed that generic Lipitor could reach the market as early as March 2010). Further, as part of the agreement, Pfizer will allow Ranbaxy to sell its version of Lipitor in Australia, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden two to four months before Liptor’s patents expire. This is likely the sweet part of the deal for Ranbaxy because all of the above mentioned markets are top sellers for anti-cholesterol drugs. Finally, because Ranbaxy was the first to file an ANDA for generic Lipitor with the FDA, it will get 6 months of market exclusivity guaranteed (in the Hatch Waxman Act) to a generic manufacturer that is first to file for generic production of a brand name drug nearing patent expiry.   However, after quickly perusing the terms of the deal, I think that it more closely resembles an authorized generics deal rather than a “true” competitive generics launch.

An Altruism-Meter for Pharma

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any stranger, a new pharmaceutical assessment tool called the Access to Medicine Index (ATMI) was unveiled earlier this week. The ATMI is the brainchild of Wim Leereveld, a former pharmaceutical marketing entrepreneur who is CEO of the  based in the Netherlands. 

According to Leereveld, the ATMI can be used to evaluate, rate and rank a pharmaceutical company’s commitment and ability to deliver, drugs, vaccines and other medicines to patients in poor countries. In other words, the ATMI helps analysts and interested parties determine whether or not a company is doing its share to be a good corporate citizen.

The rankings are based on eight, sometimes difficult-to- interpret variables that include; 1) management; 2) influence (huh?); 3) patents (access to?) 4) R& D, 5) pricing, 6) drug donations, 7) philanthropy (isn’t this what the index is really measuring?) and 8) capacity (for what?). At present, GSK has the highest ranking and Schering Plough is dead last.

Whether or not you believe the analysis or think that the ATMI has any socially-redeeming value (remember it was developed by a former marketing executive), it is still a pretty fun tool to monkey around with. Check it out….

Johnson & Johnson Settles Its Trademark Dispute With the Red Cross

You may recall that last August, Johnson & Johnson sued the Red Cross for inappropriate use of its symbol —the red cross—that has universally become associated with the non-profit relief agency. that they reached a settlement in the dispute over the mark. Not surprisingly, a settlement was reached shortly after a judge threw out much of J &J’s trademark claim against the Red Cross. Of course, as it typically in these cases, the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

J & J brought the suit against the Red Cross, because, starting in 2004, the Red Cross started licensing the symbol to other companies for use on commercial items sold in stores as part of the organization’s fund-raising program. J& J argued that the organization had promised not to engage in certain commercial activity—a part of the original trademark agreement that was struck between the drugmaker and relief agency almost 100 years ago. However, the judge presiding over the case ruled that Congressional charter gave the Red Cross the right to use the symbol even for business purposes.

Although J & J looked incredibly avaricious and took a PR hit by suing the Red Cross for trademark infringement, the company claimed that it had the right to vigorously protect its trademarks—after all, business is business. However, as several patent and trademark attorneys have repeatedly told me, it is advisable to settle or reach an agreement before any case goes to trial—you just never know what a judge is going to rule even if you think that you have a rock-solid claim! I guess J & J needs to hire some new attorneys!

Wake Up and Smell the Coffee

Does the smell of a fresh pot of coffee brewing get you going in the morning? Do you experience a rush of energy simply by getting a whiff of freshly-brewed joe? If you do, there may be a genetic explanation for it.

A group of scientists at Seoul National University in Korea exposed sleep-deprived rats to coffee bean aroma and then assessed the effects by performing genetic and protein analysis on their brain tissue. These results were compared with those obtained from sleep-deprived rats that were not exposed to coffee. Unstressed, non-coffee exposed and unstressed - coffee exposed rats served as controls in these experiments.

According to results published in The Journal of Agriculture and Food Science, the Korean scientists found that mRNA levels of 11 of 13 genes were elevated in the coffee-exposed rats: the levels of 2 others were decreased. They also found differential expression of proteins (using mass spectroscopy) in the two groups of rats. For example, a protein known to have an antioxidant effect was expressed at higher levels in the coffee-treated group.

So what does this all mean? According to the authors “the roasted coffee bean aroma changes the mRNA and protein expression levels of the rat brain, providing for the first time clues to the potential antioxidant or stress relaxation activities of the coffee bean aroma.” Will these observations hold true for humans? Only time will tell. That said, remember that the best laid plans of mice (rats?) and men often go astray.

2.  Step up your job-search activity.  This makes sense.  In many ways, a job search (like sales calls) is a numbers game.  Increase your odds by increasing your activity.

3.  Try to be as flexible as you can.  Consider contract work, part-time work, or starting at a lesser salary than you were hoping for.  It gets your foot in the door for other opportunities later.  Besides, less money is better than no money, right?

4.  Consider relocating.  Top jobs aren’t always where you are.  I love the idea of relocating and expanding your horizons…trying something new. 

5.  Scour the hidden job market.  Many jobs aren’t advertised.  Be proactive.  Use your network.  Or contact employers directly.  They might appreciate your initiative.

6.  Spend very little of your time on Internet job boards and help-wanted ads.  Look, but don’t focus.  Everyone’s looking here. 

7.  Take advantage of social networking sites.  Personally, I love LinkedIn.  But also, use MySpace or Facebook as part of your networking tactics.  Just be careful to keep it professional.

You never know when or where you may meet a prospective employer. Memory sticks, flash-drives, or email versions of your resume on your Blackberry, Treo or iPhone are must-haves in today’s volatile employment market.

Word on the Street: Pfizer May Counteroffer for Ranbaxy

Rumor has it that Pfizer may offer a counteroffer to acquire India-based generics manufacturer Ranbaxy. As you may recall, Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo agreed earlier in the week to pay about $4.6 billion for a controlling interest in Ranbaxy. According to reports many analysts expect Pfizer to attempt to queer to the Daiichi-Ranbaxy deal because “it is battling Ranbaxy in about 18 countries on patent rights of Lipitor, the largest selling cholesterol drug in the world. Lipitor has annual sales of $13 billion. In most countries the patent on the drug will expire starting 2011.”  Ranbaxy has won favorable court decisions on Lipitor in many countries including in the US, the largest drug market in the world, which accounts for 28 per cent of the global generic market estimated at $72 billion.

I tend to agree with the pundits. Pfizer has a lousy pipeline and its recent clinical trial record is horrendous. Consequently, the company must hang on (as long as possible and at any cost) to its blockbuster brands to avoid financial ruin.

Direct-to-Consumer Drug (DTC) Pharmaceutical Advertising Really is Big Business!

No doubt that many of you already know that DTC advertising is an effective way for pharmaceutical companies to “push” their drugs. However, when I saw the amount of money that was spent on DTC in 2007 I was shocked! In 2007 alone, drug companies spent $5,375,117,382 on advertising. Yes, that's $5.375 billion dollars (think of how many research grants could have been funded or how much money could have been spent on universal healthcare!).  The aggregate ROI for 25 pharma companies examined was impressive–totaling about $32 billion or roughly 7-fold!

A table published by Consumer Reports AdWatch highlights 25 of the biggest spenders along with their sales, giving an indication of how much their ad spending has paid off —or not! The drugs that received the biggest bang for the buck are bolded. Despite the conflict of interest and false advertising DTC flap over Lipitor, it still managed to have the third best return among the 25 products analyzed.

Invitrogen to Acquire Applied Biosystems

The consolidation trend in the US life sciences industry continues. Carlsbad, CA-based Invitrogen, a provider of cells, molecular and biochemical probes and reagents used in life sciences research,announced on Thursday that it will acquire (merge) with automated DNA sequencer manufacturer Applied Biosystems (ABS).  Invitrogen will pay $6.7 billion in cash and stock to buy ABS which is an independent unit of Applera Corporation.

As most of you know, ABS supplied hundreds of automated DNA sequencing machines ($300,000 per machine) that were used to sequence the human genome. The advent of automated DNA sequencers in the mid to late 1990s helped (along with Craig Venter) to speed up efforts to complete the Human Genome project which officially began in 1990. The first draft of the human genome was published in 2001. Unfortunately for ABS, it was unable to refocus and adjust to changing business conditions after the government-sponsored human genome project ended in the early 2000s.  Attempts to reinvent the company included moving into commercial businesses like selling equipment to test food for pathogens or DNA from crime scenes.

The deal, if approved by regulators, would create a giant supplier of machines and materials used by academic and pharmaceutical industry research laboratories, with about $3.5 billion in annual sales. Although the deal makes sense from a business perspective, it is likely that there will be a “reallocation of corporate resources” once the merger is approved by European and US regulators.

Around the World: Corporate Downsizing Update

It’s summertime during a recession. What better time is there to give employees an extended vacation by announcing job cuts at the start of summer?  

Generic manufacturer Mylan announced that it is cutting jobs at a pharmaceutical manufacturing plant in central Puerto Rico. According to a company spokesperson, 100 jobs will be eliminated in coming weeks. Mylan had announced in February that it would be eliminating jobs at five locations as part of a companywide restructuring. The Pittsburg, PA-based company is the latest pharmaceutical company to announce cuts in Puerto Rico. The industry has eliminated more than 3,000 jobs here since mid-2006.

In other news, Palo Alto, CA-based Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Wednesday it plans to cut 8 percent of its work force -- or 33 employees -- primarily in research and development and administrative areas, and delay development of two drugs.

Finally, according to Ed Silverman over at Pharmalot, New Jersey-based Schering Plough has begun the massive layoffs it announced last April. As you may recall, CEO Fred Hassan still reeling from the Vytorin and Zetia flap, assured analysts and shareholders that he can right the ship by laying off about 5,500 employees or 10% of Schering’s workforce. He vowed to “consolidate management; use more shared staff support and services; reduce travel; cut sales and marketing; slash R&D; consolidate product lines, particularly in the animal health unit; and close some of the 60 manufacturing plants.” The previously announced job cuts are in addition to the 400 jobs that were eliminated after Schering Plough acquired Organon Biosciences.

Unfortunately, I guess it is going to be a long, hot, summer for the folks who lost their jobs.

GlaxoSmithKline Cuts More Jobs

The Avandia debacle is still ravaging the employee ranks at GlaxoSmithKline especially at its Research Triangle Park, North Carolina and in Philadelphia locations. According to a post at Pharmalot, the UK-based drug manufacturer is cutting as many as 350 jobs (2.0% of its workforce) at both locations. This represents an almost 40% reduction in drug discovery and development activities that take place at both sites.

These cuts come after GSK closed a factory and drastically cut its sales force late last year. To make matters worse (particularly for those folks who lost their jobs) GSK purchased an early-stage drug discovery company called Sirtris Pharmaceuticals for about $720 million earlier this year. Clearly, company executives have more faith in external rather than internal drug discovery at GSK.

Japan's Daiichi Sankyo Co Buy's Generic Manufacturer Ranbaxy

Daiichi Sankyo will buy a controlling interest (50.1%) of Ranbaxy, India’s third largest generic manufacturer.  Daiichi will pay as much as $4.6 billion for the opportunity.

The deal will put Daiichi Sankyo into ninth place in the $120 billion generic-drug market behind leaders Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. and Novartis AG's Sandoz unit. According to the report “Daiichi Sankyo is mimicking strategies pursued by Novartis and Johnson & Johnson to weather turbulence in the branded-drug industry by diversifying into other markets. The acquisition also gives the Japanese company more reach in emerging regions including India, China and Eastern Europe. “

I think after this deal, that other pharmaceutical companies may consider buying profitable generics businesses. I am not sure why it has taken innovator companies so long to realize that it is much easier to join (buy??) rather than compete with generic manufacturers. It just seems so obvious to me—and I don’t even have an MBA!  Maybe there is some truth to the age-old aphorism “missing the forest for the trees.”

Personal Branding and Developing an Online Presence

Peggy McKee wrote an interesting piece on her Medical Sales Recruiter blog about personal branding and developing an online presence to find a job. For those of you who haven’t heard about personal branding, it is de rigueur and the hottest thing on the net these days. Put simply, you, the jobseeker, are the brand and to be successful (get a job), the brand must be vigorously promoted! Personal branding can be easily achieved by creating profiles on social networks like MySpace, Facebook or Linked In or creating your own promotional website using your name as the domain name.  However, there are a few things that you ought to consider before you embark on your personal branding campaign. Peggy offers a few pointers and recommendations when it comes to both personal branding and your online persona.

Employers and recruiters research prospective candidates online to get more information about them before an interview is scheduled or an offer is extended.  This can work against you if your MySpace page is filled with “party” pics (or worse), but it can work for you if you have an effective online persona

Web Worker Daily rounds up several tips for developing an effective online presence:

  • Check your Google profile.  What comes up when your name gets typed in?  Know what’s out there so you don’t get suprised.
  • Own your domain name.  Even if you don’t want to do something with it now, you might later.
  • Develop your personal brand.  Set up a LinkedIn profile.  Write a blog.  Be a guest writer on blogs specific to your industry (maybe you could write a post for me - describing your job, etc).   If you’re not sure what personal branding is or how to do it, there’s a lot available out there.  Here’s 3 articles to get you started:

Chinese Food and Your Heart

Somebody once said “Jews know two things—suffering and where to find good Chinese food”. Since I am Jewish, it is not surprising that I have experienced a fair amount of suffering throughout my life and, wherever I go, I seem to know where to find “good” Chinese food.  That said, my interest was piqued when I found a post in Yahoo Science News entitled “Study finds Chinese food good for your heart”. Given my lifelong fondness and penchant for Chinese cuisine, I thought that all of that eating that I had done had finally paid off. Unfortunately, after reading the subtitle of the article; “Chinese red yeast rice reduces repeat heart attacks/mortality rates” I realized that my joy and optimism were somewhat premature.

According to the report, researchers at Jefferson Medical College found that a partially purified extract of Chinese red yeast rice, Xuezhikang (XZK), reduced the risk of repeat heart attacks by 45%, revascularization (bypass surgery/angioplasty), cardiovascular mortality and total mortality by one-third and cancer mortality by two-thirds. The multicenter, randomized, double-blind clinical study was conducted on about 5,000 heart attack patients, ranging in age from 18-70 during a five-year period at over 60 hospitals in the People's Republic of China. Study participants were given 300-milligram XZK capsules or a placebo and tracked over a five-year period. The XZK extract used in the study contained a combination of lovastatin, lovastatin hydroxyl acid, ergosterol and several uncharacterized components.

Based on study results, the study’s authors believe that XZK may offer therapeutic benefits to people at risk of heart attack and cardiovascular disease. However, they cautioned that the active pharmacologic ingredient (API) of the red yeast rice is unknown and it isn’t clear how XZK works to fight cardiovascular disease.

Chinese medicine practitioners have long touted the benefits of red yeast rice for heart patients. Nevertheless, this is the first controlled clinical study of red yeast rice that tends to substantiate these claims. According to the study authors it is important to note that “the commercially available over-the-counter supplement found in your average health food store is not what was studied here. Those over-the-counter supplements are not regulated (by the US Food and Drug Administration), so exact amounts of active ingredient are unknown and their efficacy has not been studied yet.”

It is unfortunate that I didn’t know about the benefits of red yeast rice during my recent trip to China. I certainly would have gone out of my way to try some. That said, given the plethora of exotic foods that I tasted in China, maybe I ate some XZK without knowing it!

BMS: Ripe for a Takeover?

I have been following the pharmaceutical business for the past 20 years or so and without fail; Bristol-Myers Squibb has been rumored to be a takeover target. Well, here we go again!

 that floated the possibility that BMS is a prime takeover target again. Like many other financial pundits, Zachs believes that a takeover by Sanofi-Aventis makes the most sense. As many of you may know, BMS and Sanofi-Aventis co-own the multibillion dollar Plavix franchise (which will lose patent protection in 2011).

Rumors of a BMS takeover started in 1988 and they have always proved to be false. In my opinion, BMS has one of the stronger biologics pipeline in the pharmaceutical industry. Further, BMS is spending an enormous amount of time and resources to vigorously reinvent itself as a “next generation biopharma” company (whatever that means). The impending loss of Plavix revenues does put some pressure on the company’s ability to remain independent, but BMS has weathered many storms in the past (and lived to talk about them). That said, it is anybody’s guess whether the current rumors are real or imagined.

The Recession is Coming...The Recession is Coming...Oops, It's Here!

Much like Paul Revere back in the day, there have been repeated, urgent warnings about the impending recession that will strike the US economy. Not surprisingly, the Bush administration has done its best to deny the notion that the moribund US economy is actually in recession. 

Today, it was reported that the US unemployment rate hit 5.5% and nearly 49,000 people lost their jobs last month. This is the biggest monthly rise in the unemployment rate since 1986. So far this year, the Unemployed people grew by 861,000 in May rising to 8.5 million. To keep things in perspective, a year ago, the number of unemployed stood at 6.9 million and the jobless rate was 4.5 percent

Last month employers sharply cut jobs in manufacturing, construction, retailing and professional and businesses services. The recent and highly publicized meltdown of the airline industry insures that as many as 10,000 others or more will lose their jobs in the coming weeks. These layoffs, coupled with $4.00 per gallon gasoline, will undoubtedly have a substantial and lasting ripple effect on the American travel and leisure industries. Can anyone still believe that the US economy isn’t in recession (I can think of at least one!).

Until very recently, many of my disgruntled corporate colleagues (who I eat lunch with from time to time) indicated that they were actively seeking new employment. At lunch the other day, a soft spoken but vocal woman who previously said that “she couldn’t take it anymore and was outta here the first chance that she got” quipped; “What’s with all the complaining. We should all consider ourselves lucky that we even have jobs!” I think that says it all….

The 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2008

Each year Fortune publishes a list of the top 100 companies that it believes are the best to work for. A quick perusal of the 2008 list reveals that only two drug companies cracked the top 100 this year. Genentech was ranked number 3 (second place in 2007) and Astra Zeneca finished a distant 83rd. The only other big pharma company to ever make the list was Eli Lilly in 2006 which came in at number 52. I guess that in general, big pharma companies aren’t great places to work?

As Ed Silverman at Pharmalot points out, “Amgen wins the award for taking the biggest dive. The biotech ranked #39 in 2006 and #40 in 2007, but this year doesn’t rank at all.” I suspect that Amgen’s hasty exit from the list has a lot to with large job layoffs, a grossly over paid CEO, a flagging stock price and a weak pipeline. One company that I think ought to be on this year’s list is Massachusetts-based Genzyme which has a reputation for having outstanding employee development and retention programs. It made the list in 2006 (no. 51) and 2007 (no.43) but was conspicuously absent this year. Maybe things have changed at Genzyme?

Novartis Buys US-Based Antibiotic Discovery Company

Novartis announced today that it intends to purchase Malvern, PA-based Protez Pharmaceuticals for $400 million. Protez is developing a novel spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that is active against variety drug-resistant Gram positive (most notably MRSA )and Gram negative bacterial pathogens. Its lead compound, PZ-601, is in Phase II human clinical testing. Protez acquired PZ-601 (formerly SMP-216601) in 2005 from Dainippon Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals.   

Novartis is buying Protez to sure up its antibacterial drug pipeline. Novartis already sells Cubicin, (manufactured by Massachusetts-based Cubist Pharmaceuticals Inc.,) in Europe and is developing other antimicrobials including Aurograb and Tifacogin to treat infections.

Like many of the newly marketed antibiotics, PZ-601 is injected and not orally bioavailable. Nevertheless, it is likely that PZ-601 will provide much needed help against the ever increasing number of drug resistant bacterial isolates. Swiss companies Basilea Pharmaceutica AG and Arpida Ltd. are also working on experimental medicines to treat MRSA.

It is not clear how the acquisition will affect Protez employees.  I suspect that most of the employees will keep their jobs except for Company officers.

Salmonella in the News Again

This may be one of the more notable years for Salmonella food poisoning. First, there was a modest outbreak in the eating clubs at Princeton University and now a larger outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. This is the first time that I can recall in my almost 30 years as a card-carrying food microbiologist that there has been this many highly-publicized cases of Salmonella food poisoning in one year. Although I don’t wish Salmonella gastroenteritis on anybody, it is kind of rewarding that an organism that led to my PhD is making headlines once again. Typically, Salmonella outbreaks are not noteworthy and rarely receive much notice— usually taking a backseat to potentially life-threatening outbreaks of enteropathogenic Escherichia coli.

Like the Princeton outbreak, the exact source of the Salmonella infection is unclear. That said, public health and CDC officials are leaning towards large, raw tomatoes. In 2006, the Food and Drug Administration discovered that consumption of tomatoes in restaurants had caused a salmonella outbreak that affected 21 states. , “until the source of the outbreak is identified federal and local health officials in both states have recommended that infants, the elderly and anyone with an impaired immune system avoid eating Roma and red round tomatoes that are not grown at home or sold attached to the vine.” So far, 40 confirmed cases, with patients ranging in age from 3 to 82, have been reported in New Mexico and Texas since April. To date, 17 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported.

Molecular analyses indicated that all of the cases in New Mexico and Texas were caused by the same strain, a relatively rare serovar called Saint Paul (6th most common serovar infecting humans). Federal health officials at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA fear that this may be the beginning of a large national outbreak of Salmonella gastroenteritis. This is because about 30 cases caused by the Saint Paul strain, have also been reported this year in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas and Utah. Like the New Jersey, Texas and New Mexico outbreaks, the cause of those other outbreaks is under investigation.

Salmonella gastroenteritis generally last between four and seven days, and most people are able to recover without medical (antibiotic) treatment. But, it can sometimes lead to death in immunocompromised adults or young children. Symptoms include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea and sometimes vomiting.  Although textbook descriptions of the pathogenesis of Salmonella gastroenteritis generally portray it as a mild illness, I can tell you that people I know (lab mates of mine) who came down with the disease (gee, how did that happen?) suggest otherwise!

I suspect that fecally-contaminated water may be source of the infection. But, then again, it has been almost 30 years since I thought about Salmonella gastroenteritis. That said, I don’t think that you ever forget the essence or minutiae of your thesis work!

As I recall, the electron micrograph was taken in 1980 and the bacterium shown in the micrograph was grown for 48 hours on nutrient agar . Althought I would like to take credit for the shot (nice pose eh?),  it was taken by Phil Hegge in the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, my alma mater. if you look closely you may be able to see fimbriae along with the flagella.

Merck, Gardasil and Sex and the City

As many of you may recall, Merck tried unsuccessfully last year to lobby state and federal officials to pass legislation that would require mandatory vaccination of girls aged 9-26 with Gardasil, its anti-HPV, cervical cancer vaccine. Merck came under fire for its efforts (which seemed ethically disingenuous to many). Consequently, the company’s image took a hit and its stock price started to tumble. Although Merck stopped its lobbying campaign (mostly because of bad press and a flagging stock price), Gardasil ads continued to run and went largely unnoticed.

Because GlaxoSmithKline may be close to launching CervarixTm—its cervical cancer vaccine—  the company recently decided that it was time to ramp up its Gardasil advertising efforts. Starting this past Saturday and continuing through June 26, Gardasil ads will be gracing the screens of a theater  near you. The ads will be shown with films like “Sex and the City” (hmmm, clever wouldn’t you say?), “Get Smart” (who doesn’t remember Barbara Feldon), “The Happening” (what woman doesn’t love a scary movie), “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” (Adam Sandler is hot) and several others. I want to thank Ed Silverman over at Pharmalot for the heads up on this story!  I don't know about you, but I think that showing commercials at the movies, especially those hawking pharmaceutical products, is just plain wrong!!!!!!!!

This isn’t the first appearance of Gardasil ads at the cinema—I recall seeing an ad for Gardasil the last time I went to the movies (I don’t remember the movie but I clearly can recall the ad!). According to a Merck spokeswoman (aren’t pharmaceutical companies clever?), “We purchased advertised space that is relevant for our older female target audiences; specifically for the summer movies that are relevant to those aged 19 through 26.” 

As Ed so eloquently stated in his Pharmalot post: “Of course, plenty of teenagers will be seeing some of these flicks, too. Zohan and Get Smart are rated PG-13. And Sex and The Happening are rated R, but the restrictions only apply for kids under 17– some of whom will, no doubt, see them anyway.  In any event, Gardasil is unlikely to be available as a value pack that includes soda and popcorn. But we (Pharmalot) are curious to know whether the Gardasil beach towel is about to make a comeback.”

Is Google Health Really Different?

Google Health, the latest service from Google, was launched about three weeks ago as a beta version. Online personal health services have been around for a while (including Revolution Health and Microsoft's HealthVault) but here's what Google says is different about theirs:

1. Portability: Through Google Health, you will be able to have access and control over your health data from anywhere. People who travel will be able to move health data between their various health providers seamlessly and with total control.

2. Ease of use: Clean, easy-to-use user experience that makes managing your health information straightforward and easy.

3. Partnerships: Due to the integration of third-party services you'll be able to automatically import information such as your doctors' records, your prescription history, and your test results into Google Health in order to easily access and control your data. In the future you will be able to do things like schedule appointments and refill prescriptions.

4. Security: Google Health will protect the privacy of your health information by giving you complete control over your data.

I was particularly curious about the security issue. Google Health is not regulated by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)-the national policy on health information privacy-because Google does not provide health care services.

In an Associated Press article, Pam Dixon, executive director of the World Privacy Forum, said that by transferring records to an external service, patients could unwittingly make it easier for the government, a legal adversary or a marketing concern to obtain private information.

Google has provided a chart describing how their data confidentiality practices compare to those mandated by HIPAA. I am no expert on health information security but based on this chart, Google's policies appear fairly similar to HIPAA's.
