Breaking Up Is Hard to Do: Pfizer to Cut Jobs and Refocus Research Efforts

 

Pfizer announced earlier today that it was going to cut R&D jobs and abandon its research efforts in the areas of cardiovascular diseases, cholesterol management, osteoporosis, anemia and liver and muscle diseases. The company plans to refocus it drug development in five therapeutic areas including Alzheimer’s; diabetes; immune disorders and inflammation; cancer; pain; and mental illness, including schizophrenia. Also, the company will continue its work on anti-thrombotic agents to prevent blood clots.

The job cuts and refocusing are part of a previously announced plan to cut about $2 billion dollars from Pfizer’s operating budget. Over the past 15 years, Pfizer has gone on an unprecedented buying spree in an attempt to acquire blockbuster drugs and bolster its flagging internal drug development pipeline. Unfortunately, the gamble has not paid off and Pfizer must now attempt to reinvent itself to restore shareholder value and instill investor confidence. 

Unlike many of its competitors, Pfizer failed to invest in and capitalize on early opportunities in the biotechnology industry. The company has been trying to play catch up ever since. To that end, over the past year or so, Pfizer invested in or purchased several small biopharmaceutical companies to demonstrate its commitment to biotechnology.  It may be “too little too late!” Unfortunately, because of a lack of vision and foresight by company executives, many Pfizer employees will have to pay the ultimate price of losing their jobs as the US falls deeper into recession.

As the Deal Turns: ImClone's Mysterious Suitor to an Make Offer (or Not)

As reported yesterday by the Pharmalot Blog and verified by the New York Times today, the undisclosed “white knight” drug maker that may help ImClone ward off a hostile takeover bid by Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) will make a decision by Wednesday about whether or not it wants to make an offer for the biotech company. 

As you may recall, Carl Icahn, ImClone’s Chairman, announced about a month ago that an unnamed drug company may be willing to offer $70 per share for ImClone stock. BMS responded to the announcement by raising its initial offer from $60 to $62.50 per share for outstanding shares of ImClone’s stock. This feeble counteroffer did nothing but increase the hostilities between ImClone and BMS. BMS currently markets Erbitux ImClone’s blockbuster colon cancer treatment. Based on the tenor of this deal, it is becoming increasingly apparent that ImClone and BMS are not “close” even though they are business partners.

Mr. Icahn, in a brilliant display of his business acumen, has been able to prevent industry insiders from divining the identity of the mysterious suitor (if there is one at all). Conventional wisdom suggests that it is likely to be one of the larger drug companies that would like increase its market share in the biotechnology sector.  The good news is that we may only have to wait another 24 hours before this “cliffhanger” of a deal is resolved (ho-hum). Don’t be surprised that, in the end, BMS may wind up paying more than $70 per share to purchase ImClone.

Jobseekers Beginning to Favor Social Networking over Online Career Sites to Find Jobs

Online career sites like Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com and Yahoo Hot Jobs have gotten so big and over subscribed that they are no longer useful to most jobseekers. Many career development experts have discovered that the large career sites tend to overwhelm jobseekers because of the enormity of job possibilities that appear on them.  Unfortunately, this seemingly endless supply of job opportunities frequently induces jobseekers to spend too much time applying for online jobs and not enough time exploring non-internet based job possibilities. While applying for online jobs is facile and may be emotionally-gratifying, it usually doesn’t culminate in many face-to-face interviews or job offers for that matter. This is because most online job applications are screened by software programs looking for key words or phrases and, if your resume doesn’t contain them it will not be reviewed by a human. Further, many of the openings posted on job boards are actually placed there by recruiters and contract employment agencies—not actual companies seeking to fill positions. Often times, recruiters post expired or fictitious job descriptions on the boards to “pad” their candidate databases with qualified applicants who can be used for future job orders. Finally, sometimes unscrupulous people/companies place false or misleading ads on the big job boards. Unfortunately, these people have no qualms about taking financial advantage of job seekers who may be desperate or “down on their luck

The declining usefulness of the big online job boards has given rise to smaller career sites like Indeed.com and Simply Hired.com which are driven by powerful search engines and permit jobseekers to customize job searches based on industry, geography, salary and job availability. Other companies like BioInsights.com and OneScience.com have built niche job boards that specialize in industry-specific job listings (in this case pharma and biotech). While these new careers site are more focused, easier to navigate and frequently yield better results than the large job boards, they too can be exploited by recruiters and unscrupulous would-be employers. 

The growing popularity of social networking sites represents an important paradigm shift for jobseekers and employers. Belonging to popular social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook or Plaxo allows job seekers to cast a wider net by taking advantage of the contacts or connections that their “friends” may have at various companies and organizations. Further, it is not uncommon for people within a network to pass on resumes or put in a good word to hiring managers on behalf of friends or contacts from their network who are seeking employment.  However, it is important to also point out that recruiters and contract employment agencies have also recognized the potential and power of social networks. Recruiters and HR specialists now routinely troll social networks (particularly Linked In and Facebook) for qualified candidates and don’t hesitate to contact “qualified candidates” whether or not they are actively looking for a job. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, hiring managers and recruiters are becoming increasingly reliant on social networks to screen and gather personal information about job candidates to assess their suitability for certain jobs. According to a 2006 study conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management, recruiters use social networking sites 23 per cent more than they did in 2006 to verify resumes, screen applicants and fill vacancies. Also, the study found that possible negative information posted on social network profiles—personal views, alcohol or drug use, sexually-oriented pictures or social commentaries— have a greater impact on hiring decisions than any positive information that may also appear on job seeker profiles.

The growing use of social networks by job seekers to find employment and employers and recruiters to screen job applicants has profound implications for people who belong to these networks. With this in mind, if you currently have profiles associated with your legal name on social networks like Face Book, MySpace or Linked In, I strongly recommend that are completely devoid of the following: 1) sexually suggestive or explicit photographs, 2) posts or photos depicting excessive alcohol or drug use, 3) any rants that you may have posted about your boss or a current place of employment and 4) personal information about your age, marital status, children or sexual orientation. Also, if you are actively involved in a job search, it is a good idea to upload a short bio or resume to your profile and to post any bonafide recommendations or career award and honors that you may have received. However, if you find the prospect of having to sanitize your MySpace and Facebook profiles unpalatable, then I suggest that you remove your name from your current profile(s) and replace it with an alias (your friends will still  know who you are) and build another profile with your real name for professional use only.   

We live in a highly competitive, constantly-changing world where even slightly negative perceptions about a person may mean the different between employment or not. Ironically, while the Internet allows greater freedom of expression, it also permits people with decision-making powers to more easily scrutinize our daily activities and gain greater insights into our personal lives. Consequently, the onus is on jobseekers to regulate or control what prospective employers may learn about them online. Put simply, the success or failure of your career may literally be in your own hands. That said, the next time that you update your Facebook or MySpace profiles take a moment (before you hit the “send button”) and ask yourself whether or not the new information “is going to help or hurt my career?”

Honey as an Antibiotic?

As an undergraduate at Cornell, I took a course called "Bee Keeping" mostly because it had the reputation of being a  “gut” course (i.e., easy to ace) and I had a passing interest in entomological microbiology. To this day, I will tell you that it is one of the best courses that I have taken in my academic career. It was taught by a practicing bee keeper who maintained hives in Florida during the winter and in Ithaca during the summer (not surprisingly the course was taught in the Spring semester so that his bees could pollinate the local crops).

Not only did we learn a lot about honey bee biology and social insect behavior, we also learned a great deal about honey and its virtues (we even got to sample different types of honey from time to time). One of honey’s lesser known properties is that it is sterile. This is because honey is extremely hygroscopic and has high concentrations of fructose, thereby preventing the growth of bacteria. These properties led me to wonder in those days whether honey would be an effective antibiotic in certain situations. 

Over the next 30 years or so, I had all but forgotten about the possible use of honey as an antibacterial. Then, much to my surprise, I came across a recent Canadian study which suggests that honey may be useful to treat a variety of infections. Apparently, honey is surprisingly effective in treating bacterial biofilms which are increasingly implicated in the etiology of many chronic skin, mucosal and wound infections. Previous studies showed that honey is effective in wound healing. The researchers who conducted the study also suggested that a “honey rinse” might be effective for treating  "stubborn ear, nose and throat infections."

Interestingly, not all of the honey that was tested exhibited potent antibacterial properties. Canadian clover and buckwheat honey didn’t exhibit any antibacterial properties at all. This suggests that the plant nectars that the bees use to make honey might influence the antibiotic properties of various honeys. It is important to note that the results of these experiments are very preliminary and additional studies will definitely be required to support or refute the use of honey as an antibiotic. Nevertheless, I thought the results were exciting and worth mentioning.

A Bold Step Forward: Lilly and Merck to Disclose Fees Paid to Physicians

 

Beginning in 2009, Eli Lilly and Merck will post in online databases all payments made to doctors for speaking and consulting services. According to an article in today’s New York Times, the postings will “likely include” the names of the doctors, or will provide some other identifying information about them, along with the reason for the payments.

The lack of disclosure by physicians about their relationships with drug and medical devices companies have  plagued medical journals and continuing medical education programs for many years. For those of you who may not know commercial and business relationships (including consulting and speaker fees) are common between leading medical thought leaders and drug companies. In the last two decades alone, drug and device makers have made payments to tens of thousands of doctors and researchers in all medical specialties and areas of research. Critics of these practices (including the US Congress) are worried that this money could taint doctors’ research plans or clinical judgment when it comes to new drug/device approval. These concerns have prompted government agencies, medical journals and universities to look more closely at the deals. Many medical journals and granting agencies now require that physicians disclose all of their relationships to drug and device companies before their manuscripts and grants are reviewed.

Lilly and Merck’s decision to publicly disclose which physicians are on their payrolls is a step in the right direction. Full disclose and more transparency about the relationships between physicians and drug/devices makers is an important first step to limit subjectivity and conflict of interest issues when it comes to new drug/device approvals.

How to Turn a Bad Job into a Positive Career Outcome

 

Earlier in my career, like many others, I found myself in, what looking back, were bad jobs. At the time, I didn’t realize that they were bad jobs because I was young and a very inexperienced employee. I tended to blame myself rather than the job for my unhappiness and dissatisfaction. Consequently, I did many things that were not in my best self interest.

In my experience, employees who find themselves in bad jobs tend to be unhappy, complain a lot and are emotionally-invested in convincing others how awful the situation at work is. While this may be emotionally rewarding and cathartic, it is not the wisest thing that an employee in a bad job can do. These bad job employees frequently receive poor performance reviews, little or no bonuses or pay raises and are the first to go when layoffs are necessary (corporations and other business entities don’t like complainers and rabble rousers).

Over the years, I learned to manage some of these ill-advised, bad job behaviors—sometimes successfully and oft times not. These days, I like to think that I can manage bad job situations better than I have in the past. That said, I came across an insightful post on the Monster Blog that articulates how employees can leverage what they have learned from their bad job experiences into positive career outcomes. Many of the author's insights and recommendations are consistent with what I learned from my own bad job experiences. Nevertheless, it is important to remember a few things when dealing with a bad job situation.

First, there is no such thing as a perfect job (although many people will try to convince you otherwise). Second, people who complain loudly to their cronies will rarely let their true feelings be known to management or others who are responsible for a bad job environment. Third, sometimes it really isn’t the job but you! And, finally, if you find yourself in a bad job situation, refrain from complaining, update your resume and quietly but actively look for new career opportunities that may be more consistent with your job needs and long term goals. Also it is important to truly understand that the "grass isn't always greener other side of the fence."  As I liked to tell job candidates when I was working as a recruiter “Don’t expect  things to be drastically different at your new job— it’s same old sh-t, just at higher pay!”

HPV and Homeland Security

 On the surface, you wouldn’t think that the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV, the causative agent of venereal warts and cervical cancer) and US Homeland Security have much in common. However, they have more in common than you think as reported in yesterday's Pharmalot blog.

According to a report by the TheStreet.com , Homeland Security’s US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the first government agency to mandate that all female immigrants’ ages 11 to 26 years old be vaccinated against HPV. Because Gardasil is the only cervical cancer (HPV) vaccine that is approved for use in the US it will the vaccine used for the mandatory immunizations. Surprisingly, there is no HPV vaccination requirement for US visa holders or American citizens.

Since the policy was begun, an estimated 233,000 females aged 11 to 26 who entered the US as prospective citizens paid a combined $52 million or so for the vaccinations according to the Street.com article. Curiously, the USCIS is requiring only a single injection for females who receive the vaccine—the Gardasil label indicates that three injections are required for full anti-HPV effectiveness.

As you may recall, more than 20 states rejected plans backed by Merck to make Gardasil vaccination mandatory. Merck abandoned its campaign after parents and medical experts expressed concern about safety and effectiveness. While Gardasil vaccination is optional for American citizens, there is apparently no opt-out provision for females who simply want to immigrate to the US. The confusion may like lie in a document issued by the US State Department called form DS-3025, or “vaccination documentation worksheet which says vaccination against “Human Papillomavirus is required for US immigrant visa applicants.” Here is the form.

John Abramson, the former chairman of the CDC’s Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices when the HPV requirement began in April 2007, and an opponent of mandatory vaccination said “This is not a disease that is communicable like SARS or pandemic flu or even measles.” “I am stunned. It was not the intention of the policy to mandate vaccination of immigrants,”

Ironically, Merck which has been pushing as hard as it can to promote Gardasil use isn’t aware of the Homeland Security policy, according to a Merck spokeswoman. It just goes to show how effective unregulated pharmaceutical lobbying can be!!!

ImClone Stands Strong!

 Previously, on the Bristol-Myers Squibb/ImClone Let’s Make a Deal Show. BMS offered $60 per share for the outstanding shares of ImClone that it doesn’t already own. As expected, Carl Icahn, ImClones’s Chairman and former corporate raider, summarily rejected BMS’ offer as insulting and an attempt by BMS to undervalue ImClone’s stock. Then, after a month of silence between the two parties, Mr Icahn announced that an undisclosed pharmaceutical suitor had made a better offer to buy ImClone. Today, about three weeks after Mr Icahn disclosed the information about his mysterious stranger, BMS (as expected) grudgingly raised its offer from $60 to $62 per share. The mysterious stranger seems to be out of the mix now.

Conventional wisdom (and word on the street) suggests that ImClone’s stock is worth about $70-$75 per share and that Carl (and the ImClone board of directors) will not sell the company for anything less. Today’s exchange between BMS and ImClone prompted a Wall Street analyst who has been closely following the twists and turns of the deal to write “we view Bristol’s increased bid and attempt to remove the company’s board as futile. The premium over the prior $60 offer is insufficient, in our view, to woo the larger ImClone stock holders to join it in revolt against Mr. Icahn and his allies on the board. The net result of Bristol’s efforts will amount to little more than yet another exchange of testy letters between the two parties.” And, in fact, Jim Cornelius, BMS’s CEO took the opportunity to do just 

It seems to me that whether or not a deal is reached depends more on who wins the pissing match between Mr Cornelius and Mr. Icahn rather than what is in the best interest of the shareholders of both companies. C’mon guys, we are currently in the midst of the worst economic meltdown in the history of the US —do the right thing and consummate the deal already!

Some Cool Web 2.0 Tools for Bioscientists

I was reading Karen Ventii’s Science to Life blog today and she “turned me on” to a couple of new web-based tools that I think might be useful to people who work in the biosciences. I added Karen’s recommendations to a list that I was building and decided that it had reached enough of a critical mass to share it with you.

The first of these new tools is called graduatejunction.com, a research community primarily aimed at graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. According to its founders—a team of UK graduate students at Durham and Oxford universities—the intent of graduatejunction.com is build a community of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows so that members can stay abreast of research activities within in the community and to connect with other community members who share common research interests. Not a bad idea, considering that many graduate students and postdocs frequently operate in intentional mentor-induced research vacuums.

The second is called labmeeting.com. It is a novel, web-based tool that helps researchers organize (and search) personal PDF collections, share laboratory protocols, Powerpoint presentations and other scientific data with their lab mates. The software was created by graduate students at Stanford University and it aims to organize laboratory research so that it can be conducted more efficiently and at a faster pace (time is money after all). I think that this concept has legs and might be a big winner downstream (although security will be of paramount importance).

Another new tool that warrants praise is biomedexperts.com that was created by Collexis, Inc. In my opinion, biomedexperts.com is the “mother of all” publication search tools and literature management systems. Billed as the first literature-based social network, it allows users to quickly perform personalized literature searches (based on authorship and research interests) and then identify potential collaborators or competitors who have published in the same research areas. Unfortunately, while biomedexperts.com is a “monster” web-based, literature search application, the communication and interactivity between community members is extremely limited and almost non-existent.

Finally, for those of you who are tired of using PubMed’s arcane Boolean search algorithm to find relevant publications, you might consider trying a new free search engine (semanticmedline.com) that allows users to search MEDLINE using phrases or “conventional sentences." Cognition Technologies, creator of the site, says its “semantic natural language processing technology "incorporates word and phrase knowledge to comprehend the meaning and nuances of the English language." Although early reviews suggest that semanticmedline.com might not powerful enough for doing comprehensive science literature searches, it may be useful in situations when you are working on a time-sensitive project or you need to quickly find an article for this afternoon’s journal club meeting (that you failed  to enter into your blackberry or iPhone).

Check them out—they are all pretty cool (for scientists anyway-not that there is anything wrong with that)!

The Job Loss Carousel Keeps Spinning in New Jersey

The Pharmalot Blog reported today that Schering Plough will eliminate 1,000sales jobs or 20% of its sales force by October. This latest round of layoffs is part of a reorganization plan that was announced last year to cut 10% of it workforce by 2012 (although must of the downsizing will occur by 2010). The reorganization was announced shortly after Schering purchased Organon Biosciences and the “wheels came off” of its Zetia/Vytorin anti-cholesterol medication franchise.

In other news, BioJobBlog heard through the grapevine that Merck has been quietly laying off workers (since Labor Day) in an attempt to reduce its workforce by 20% over the next few years. Many very talented people who have been with Merck for years are looking for new jobs.

Finally, Montvale, NJ-based Memory Pharmaceuticals announced that it was laying off 55 workers or roughly 50% of its workforce. The company, which went public in a much heralded IPO in 2004, focuses on developing treatments for cognitive disorders. Although the company has never been profitable, the person who ran the company for the past three years (first as president, then CEO and finally CFO) earned $876,807 last year. Not surprisingly, he will be leaving the company as part of the downsizing initiative.

The ongoing pharma slowdown coupled with this week’s Wall Street meltdown (many people who work on Wall Street live in New Jersey) should make New Jersey a very challenging and interesting place to live in the coming months.

A Preemptive Strike: US Medical Devices DTC Advertising Comes Under Fire

Just when the medical device industry is gaining steam and poised to challenge pharma and biotech companies for market share and profits, some lawmakers have begun to question the medical devices industry’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising practices. Last year, the medical device industry spent about $193 million for DTC advertising on television and the Internet—a mere fraction of what was spent on DTC consumer advertising for prescription drugs sold by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

One reason given by lawmakers to justify its current scrutiny of medical devices DTC advertising practices is that “medical devices can have more of an impact on a patient’s well-being than a drug because devices often require surgery to implant and may remain inside the body for years.” However, in response, a representative from the Advanced Medical Technology Association, a medical devices trade group said, “While an advertisement may stimulate a patient to ask a doctor about device, the process of receiving one involves a discussion of its benefits and risks.” He went on to say “You may take a pill because it doesn’t involve very much. But you don’t undergo surgery unless you think you have a serious need for it.” 

Another reason cited by Herb Kohl, a Democrat from Wisconsin is “The medical device industry is just beginning to get into the game.” Yes, Mr Kohl’s assertion is absolutely correct. Unlike most pharma and biotechnology companies, which have engaged in unregulated DTC advertising for the past 10 years or so—and literally made billions— the medical devices industry was slow to recognize that DTC advertising could be used to effectively hawk its products. I guess the thought here is: “to head ‘em off at the pass!”

The current call for an investigation into the DTC practices of some medical devices companies raises several interesting questions. First, is the investigation simply a red herring to distract FDA from crafting new regulations to rein in and more tightly control DTC advertising by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies? (While FDA has recently revised some of its DTC advertising guidelines, the changes are still not rigorous enough). Second, could the call for increased scrutiny of the medical devices industry simply be an attempt (by pharma and biotech lobbyists) to stifle the recent, explosive growth of the medical devices industry?  Finally, why are lawmakers rather than the agency (which oversees the device industry) investigating the DTC advertising practices of medical devices companies?

On a personal note, I support tighter regulations and increased scrutiny of the DTC advertising practices for all  life sciences companies. Although DTC ads are directly aimed at consumers, their real purpose is to influence prescribing practices of physicians by inducing patients to ask questions about whether or not the drugs or devices that they “saw on TV” are appropriate for them. That said, I believe that it is up to FDA to insure that all DTC ads are fairly balanced (risks vs. benefits) and medically accurate before they are viewed by the American public.

Twitter: What Is It Good For?

 Because I am trying to become a social network maven (and I wanted to be cool), joining Twitter was a no- brainer.  I have used Twitter for over two months now and I still haven’t figured out why people use it. I frequently post Twits or Tweets (whatever they are called) and I rarely get any responses, even when I direct the questions to some of my followers. Would somebody out there be so kind as to tell me what I am doing wrong or how to use Twitter correctly?

Missing the Boat: Firefox vs Internet Explorer

 

I vividly remember when Netscape and Microsoft were “duking it out” for browser dominance in the mid 1990s. As you may have guessed, I was an ardent Netscape supporter. Unfortunately, Microsoft cleaned Netscape’s clock and Internet Explore (IE) became the default web browser of choice for many years,

Although I run a blog, belong to many social networks and like to think of myself as somebody who readily embraces change, I have religiously used IE since Netscape’s demise. That said, I never noticed how slow and clunky IE was until I started working at home again. I always attributed IE’s slowness and frequently aberrant behavior at work to my employer’s woefully inadequate internet connection. However, because I connect to the internet at home via FIOS, IE’s continued lack of responsiveness and frequent crashes could no longer be explained by inadequate “pipe size” or poor connectivity.

The thing that sealed the deal for me were my unsuccessful attempts last evening to use IE to access my Fantasy Football League’s homepage to check yesterdays results. My obsessive need to learn my Fantasy Football fate, forced me to use Firefox to attempt to access the site (I downloaded a version of Firefox several years ago). While I still wasn’t able to connect to my Fantasy Football homepage (the servers were jammed by other obsessive people like me), I found that I was able to access many of my other favorite websites much more quickly and with greater ease than I had ever experienced with IE (with or without a FIOS connection). An apt comparison for the speed differences between Firefox and IE is Usain Bolt’s dominating performance over the rest of the field in the 100 meter race at this year’s Olympics in Beijing.

Over the past few years, many technologically-savvy people suggested that I switch from IE to Firefox. I didn’t because I subscribe to the notion that if “it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” That said, I am now a Firefox devotee. I feel like I just emerged from the Dark Ages!!!!!

Are Health Costs for American Workers Leveling Off?

I read today in the New York Times that healthcare costs are expect to ease slightly in 2009 for employers. According to Mercer, a healthcare consulting firm, healthcare benefit costs are expected to rise only 5.7% in 2009. Since 2005, annual increases in healthcare spending have hovered around 6.1%.

At first glance, this ought to be good news for the millions of workers employed by American companies. But, like most other reports and survey conducted during the disastrous Bush Administration, the numbers don’t tell the real story. In reality, employers are aggressively shifting the healthcare burden to employees by raising premiums and pushing deductibles and co-payments to all time record highs. For example, I learned the other day that my good friend Pete, who works as recruiter in the hospitality business, has to pay $50 each time he or any member of his family (he has 5 children) goes to the doctor. Unlike other people who have less onerous co-pays, Pete has to pick and choose which family aliments really require medical attention. These decisions must be extremely difficult and stressful for Pete, who had prostate cancer surgery less than a year ago.

Regardless of your political persuasions, it is obvious to me that healthcare reform is long overdue in the US. I hope that Barack Obama begins to address this ongoing, serious problem shortly after he is elected President in November, 2009.

The Thing about Gardasil

The Pharmalot blog reported today that Merck received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to use Gardasil to prevent vaginal and vulval cancer in addition to cervical cancer.

Of late, Gardasil has been a lightening rod for controversy—mostly because of Merck’s unrelenting marketing campaigns (and the behind-the-scenes lobbying for the vaccine to be placed on the US mandatory vaccination list)  coupled with the Christian right’s moral machinations about premarital sex and sexually transmitted diseases in general. Also, let’s not forget the brouhaha surrounding FDA’s decision to delay approval of GlaxoSmithKline’s competing cervical cancer vaccine called Cervarix. Finally, about a month ago, there was study published in the New England Journal of Medicine questioning the cost effectiveness of Gardasil vaccination of women after the age of 18.

Regardless of your moral, ethical or business concerns about Gardasil, the bottom line is this: girls/women vaccinated with Gardasil are much less likely to develop cervical cancer as compared with those who are not vaccinated.

As I have mentioned before, all approved and marketed drugs have side effects and possible safety/tolerability issues. More importantly, the decision to approve a particular drug is always based on a careful risks/benefits assessment by government healthcare regulators. Whether or not a person uses a drug or vaccine is ultimately a personal choice. With the exception of mandatory childhood vaccines (children can be exempted for moral or religious reasons), every American has the right to decide whether or not to use a medication or undergo a treatment recommend by a healthcare professional. Based on everything that I have read about Gardasil, it appears to be a safe and effective vaccine to prevent cervical cancer. When FDA finally approves Cervarix (probably sometime in late 2009), it will offer women who may have concerns about Gardasil with an alternate vaccine to protect them against developing cervical cancer.

The funny thing about the Gardasil firestorm is that cervical cancer isn’t a major healthcare problem in the US. This is because a majority of American women undergo annual routine gynecological examinations (that include pap smears, the current gold standard for cervical cancer detection). In contrast, cervical cancer is a major healthcare problem and economic concern in Asia, most notably in China and India. This begs the question—why are Merck and GSK so intent on selling their cervical cancer vaccines in the US? Put simply, there is still much more money to be made in the US than in Asia. Look for approval of Gardasil and Cervarix in China and India when the middle class of both countries reach a critical mass.

BioJob News: Novartis to Expand Research Operations in Cambridge, MA

Novartis announced today that it will open a new research facility and hire an additional 150 people by the end of 2009 for a Research Center of Excellence in Virology in Cambridge, MA. That will increase the number of people employed by the company in Cambridge to more than 1,800 workers. Researchers at the new center will study vaccines for HIV/AIDS influenza, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and respiratory syncitial virus (RSV). 

The vaccine business once avoided like the plague by most pharma companies, has been growing by leaps and bound over the past five years and is sizzling hot these days. According to analysts, vaccines generated about $16 billion dollars last year. For example, Merck’s anti-human papilloma virus vaccine Gardasil generated $1.5 billion in sales in 2007.

Novartis clearly sees an upside in the vaccine business and is willing to make a wise investment for the future.

Social Networking and Scientific Research

Over the past year or so, social networking has taken the Internet by storm. This is largely  because social networking software purveyors like CrowdVine and Ning have provided out-of-the-box solutions that allow people to easily create social networks that strike their fancy. That said, will the advent of social networks do anything more than allow musicians to sell records or provide an easy place for people to hook up? To that end, Jessica a regular BioJobBlog reader sent me a story (see below) about a survey that was performed to gauge the possible impact of social networking on scientific research.

Social Applications to Play Deeper Role in Future Research

The future of social media will not just build friendships but support groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

Scientists and researchers are using social media… but mostly for professional reasons. A recent survey from 2collab reveals that over half of science, medical and technical information specialists working in academia and government institutions believe social networking will play a key role in shaping the future of research. Additionally, the study suggests tomorrow’s university faculty (respondents aged 25 - 44 in academic research positions who have published 1-10 articles) are already heavily using social media and are eager for the applications to be further developed for use in their work.

According to the survey which included 1,800 respondents, the top areas where social applications will have a major influence on research in the next five years include:

1.      Professional networking and collaboration (34.4%)

2.      Career development (26.4%)

3.      Critical analysis and evaluation of research data (25.3%)

4.      Dissemination of research output (24.5%)

5.      Conducting primary research (23.4%)

6.      Grant application and funding (22.7%)

Much to my delight, the results from the survey confirmed my belief that social networking among scientists would stimulate and be a boon to scientific research. This strengthened my conviction to move forward with the bioscience networking site, BioCrowd, that Vincent Racaniello and I plan to launch by the end of September, 2008. Rumor has it that their may be gifts for the first 100 people who join after launch.

So, don’t wait and become part of the BioCrowd today.

A Different Slant on Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) Advertising

I previously posted a piece on BioJobBlog about direct-to-consumer advertising that is used by many pharma and biotech companies to induce people who see the ads to ask their physicians about a “ drug that they heard about on TV.” John Heubusch who runs Writing Frontier.com, read the post and pointed me in the direction of a piece that he wrote on the same topic. His slant on the topic is different than mine but we both reach similar conclusions—DTC advertising needs to be better regulated by FDA.

Another New Antibiotic Bites the Dust (for now)

Pfizer announced today that it would withdraw marketing application being considered at FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) for Dalbavancin an antibiotic it was developing for complicated skin infections caused by bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Pfizer acquired Dalbavancin after it purchased California-based Vicuron Pharmaceuticals for $1.9 billion in 2005. At that time, Vicuron had filed an NDA with FDA and had expected approval for the novel antibiotic. Instead, after acquiring Vicuron, Pfizer received an approvable letter from FDA that requested additional studies before the agency would approve the drug. Based on the agency’s comments, Pfizer decided to withdraw the original US and European applications filed by Vicuron and conduct addition Phase III clinical trials for the complicated skin and soft tissue infection and pediatric indications. I suspect that results from these trials will determine whether Pfizer files new applications with FDA and EMEA for Dalbavancin.

For those of you who may not know, Vicuron Pharmaceuticals was formerly called Versicor, a company founded by Eric Gordon, Mickey Gorman and others. In 1996, I was recruited to interview for a Vice President of Biology position at the company.  At that time, Versicor had about 15 employees — Eric was CEO and Mickey was a consultant.  Although Eric, Mickey and I became fast friends, I didn’t get the job (they never hired anybody for the position). 

Both Eric and Mickey left Versicor a couple of years later. Eric went on to start Sunesis, a very successful Bay area oncology company and Mickey retired to his home in Key West, FL. From time to time, I would run into Eric at BIO meetings and Mickey and I would meet up at my all time favorite Vietnamese restaurant (Hy Vong) in Little Havana in Miami, FL. Eric has since retired after 30 years in the pharma/biotech biz and Mickey unfortunately passed away from cancer in the early 2000s.

 

After meeting Eric and Mickey, I knew that Versicor would be a success one day—the $1.9 billion that Pfizer paid for Vicuron tends to validate that notion. While I didn’t benefit financially from Versicor, I was lucky and fortunate to meet two, really smart, fascinating and genuine individuals who helped me to establish my credibility in the biopharmaceutical industry.  As the saying goes “Money isn’t everything!”

How to Choose a Recession Proof Career

Since the US is officially in a recession (and recessions are likely to continue to occur in the future), those of you who are embarking or deciding on a new career ought to consider whether your career of choice can weather an economic recession.

Coincidentally, shortly after I was vanquished by the current recession late last week, a BioJobBlog reader pointed me to a post entitled“Choosing a Recession Proof Career.”

Nobody is Recession Proof

As the old saying goes, nobody is indispensable.  On the heels of Friday's report about US unemployment reaching 6.1 per cent, I learned that my contract medical writing position would be ending 4 months sooner than expected.  I worked at the company for 1.5 years and was excepting to finish out a two-year stint.

Of course, given the precarious financial state of the pharmaceutical industry, I had been looking and was able to find several opportunities that may translate into freelance gigs or possible employment. FDA's Top 20 (Safety) "Hit List"

I came across an interesting post today that lists the medications that the US Food and Drug Administration is monitoring for possible safety risks. The agency began looking into the safety profiles of these drugs after it received reports of health problems. The list contains only 20 drugs but it is worth a look anyway. Some notables on the list include some blockbusters like Cymbalta, Tysbari, Seroquel and OxyContin. 

The list is the first  in a series of list that the agency will regularly publish. The stated goal of these lists is to keep physicians and their patients better informed about the safety of FDA approved pharmaceutical products.

While these drugs are still considered safe and effective, FDA is required by law to investigate any and all complaints about the drugs that it approves. Apparently, the drugs on the current list reached a critical threshold that triggered mandatory safety  investigations.

New Jersey Dog Breeder Update

As the saying goes—the plot thickens. A couple of days ago a person who has been following our unfolding doggy drama recommended that I look into a DNA testing kit for dogs called Wisdom Panel MX. The Wisdom Panel MX was developed by Mars Veterinary, a subsidiary of the candy bar maker that also manufactures and sells dog food.

Scientists at Mars spent about 6 years mining and analyzing canine genome databases and were able to develop breed specific probes that can distinguish between 130 different breeds of dogs with close to 85% reliability. That said, while the test may not be able to reliably tell you exactly what you have, the sensitivity of the test is sufficient to tell you what you don’t have i.e., it will tell you whether or not your dog is a purebred or a mix.

 As I mentioned in previous posts, we were purportedly sold two Havanese dogs. If the dogs are truly Havanese, then the Wisdom Panel should reliably verify that assertion. Similarly, if our dogs are not really Havanese or a mix of Havanese and some other breed (s) then the Wisdom Panel tests ought to be able to tell us that as well.

As luck would have it, on our recent excursion to Maine, we literally ran into two relatively uncommon purebred dogs ( at least uncommon to us) —one was a Maltese and the other a Bichon. Moose—the rescue puppy who was advertised and sold to us as a 9 month-old Havanese—looked almost identical to the Maltese. Further, a so-called groomer (who posted a comment on a previous post about Moose) referred to him a Maltese which tended to validate our idea that Moose was not a Havanese but really a Maltese or a Maltese-mix.  

Again, coincidentally, my wife took Sandy (our Havanese puppy that we previously bought from the same breeder who sold us Moose) to be groomed today. Since it was Sandy’s first visit, the groomer asked what breed she was. After pausing for a second, the groomer replied “I am not  completely sure but I don’t think Sandy is a purebred Havanese –she looks like she has a fair amount of yorkie (Yorkshire terrier) in her.”

The Wisdom Panel MX kits arrived by FedEx today and we are taking the dogs to the vet at 4:00 to have blood drawn. Stay tuned for future updates.

Astellas to Reduce It's Workforce by 200 in Norman, Oklahoma

Astellas, a company formed in 2005 following the merger of Japanese-based pharmaceutical giants, Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd. and Fujisawa Pharmaceutical Co. Ltd, announced that it is hoping that 200 pharmaceutical workers in its production facility in Norman, OK will take early retirement to cut labor costs. The downsizing is in response to impending patent expiry of the company’s blockbuster urology product Flomax.

A company spokesperson said “The early retirement program seeks to reduce the workforce by about 30 percent, which would leave about 140 people at the Norman plant.” The loss of these jobs is likely to have a substantial economic impact on the small Oklahoma town many of whose residents have worked at the plant for over 20 years.

Astellas employees around 17,000 workers worldwide. When pharmaceutical jobs are cut in OK, you know the industry is in bad shape.

Sexual Infidelity: Of Mice (sic Voles) and Men

After hearing the story last night on my local late night news that scientists had discovered a “gene that causes men to cheat,” I felt compelled (as a red-blooded American male) to investigate the story in greater detail. After all, what man wouldn’t want to claim that his philandering behavior was caused by aberrant genes—“Honey, I really do love you but my genes made me do it!”

A quick perusal of several articles on the subject revealed that scientists at Sweden’s famed Karolinska Institute had previously identified a variant of a gene that may be responsible for the sexual infidelity in voles (mole-like mammals). The wild type gene is thought to encode a protein that regulates the activity of hormones involved in vole sexual fidelity.

In an attempt to extend their observations to humans, Karolinska scientists screened 1,000 couples and found that two of five (40%) males had the so-called “cheating allele (s).” Not surprisingly, the researchers didn’t disclose whether men with the variant allele(s) cheated (or were more likely to cheat) on their mates. The researches primarily focused on men because the gene is thought to play less of a role in females.

I think the results of the study are interesting—and may have some basis in fact— but I think the news media, as usual, has made a “mountain out of a mole hill (pardon the pun)!” Undoubtedly, the discovery may provide men caught cheating with an excuse albeit a feeble one. However, it is evident that the study will provide little solace for women who are caught cheating on their mates!!!!

After spending seven long years as a medical school professor listening to one immunology seminar after another, one thing is for certain--that discoveries in mice don’t always translate well in humans. That said, I think the jury may still be out on the “cheating gene.”

Work Place Ethics: What Decision Will You Make When Put to the Test?

All of us, (especially scientists) like to think that we have high moral and ethical standards. While in theory this may be true, there will come a time in your career when you’re faced with an ethical dilemma. Do you possess the mettle to make the right— or perhaps more apt— the most ethical decision? To gain some insight into your personal code of ethics (or lack thereof), I strongly recommend that you take a Monster Career quiz that purportedly measures how ethical you truly are.

Despite some assertions to the contrary, I’m still an ethical guy (although not as ethical as I thought)!

More "Belt-Tightening" at Bristol-Myers Squibb

A little over a year ago, Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) launched its “productivity transformation initiative” (PTI) designed to “transform” the company into a next generation biopharma leader. As most of you may already know, PTI is corporate speak for layoffs and downsizing.

The PTI was largely in response to impending loss of patent protection in 2011 of its blockbuster Plavix, an anti-thrombosis drug that BMS co-markets with Sanofi Aventis. While BMS has a deep and innovative drug pipeline, the likelihood that the company will be able to replace Plavix revenues with one of its investigational drugs is remote.

To make matters worse, late last week, one of Plavix’s likely successors, an investigational anti-clotting drug called apixaban (being co-developed with Pfizer) failed to meet its primary clinical endpoints in a pivotal Phase III clinical trial called Advance 1 which was designed to evaluate the drug for prevention of venous thromboembolism in patients undergoing total knee replacement.  The 3,195-patient study compared apixaban, an oral Factor Xa inhibitor given at a dose of 2.5 mg, twice daily, to twice-daily 30mg injections of Sanofi-Aventis’ Lovenox (enoxaparin). This late stage clinical failure prompted the company to announce that it would no longer seek approval of apixaban in 2009 as previously planned.

Early this week, BMS ratcheted up the PTI and imposed a total hiring freeze for all permanent employees, consultants and leased workers (contractors). Previously, vacated permanent or temporary positions could be refilled if appropriate, qualified job candidates were identified. Finally, the company announced today that it would permanently ground its corporate fleet of jets that was operating out of Mercer County Airport in Trenton, NJ. According to an article in my local paper, the Trenton Times, BMS plans to sell four aircraft and layoff about 32 employees, mostly pilots and mechanics. 

Despite all of the other PTI initiatives implemented to date, the decision to sell all of its corporate jets sends a clear signal to stakeholders that BMS truly “means business”! I guess Jim Cornelius and other BMS executives will have to book commercial flights or take Amtrak to out-of-town meetings for the foreseeable future. That said, I doubt that Jim and others will be driving or taking the train to meetings in New York City or Washington—the corporate helicopter fleet is still operating!!!!!

New Jersey Dog Breeder Darkside: Redux

Since the original post about bogus dog breeding in New Jersey, I received several comments from the alleged breeder(s)" who sold us our dogs Moose and Sandy.  I invite you to read them---they are very interesting to say to least. 

A person who became involved with our little doggy drama sent me a link to a company that does genetic testing verify or refute canine breed or pedigree claims.  We are going to have both of our dogs tested.  We suspect that Moose is not a havanese as billed but a maltese/bichon or maybe a maltese/havanese mix . As luck would have it, we met both a maltese and bichon during our trip to Moosehead Lake in Maine and learned alot about both breeds. Moose looks alot like a maltese but unlike pure malteses who are all white, he has quite a bit of cream coloring in his coat.

The jury is still out on Sandy (who we bought as a 10 week old puppy) is suppose to be a full-blooded havanese female.  She looks like havanese that we have seen in photos, but given the circumstances we are not certain that she is really what she is supposed to be!

If either or both of the dogs are not what they were claimed to be in the pedigree papers that we received, it is our belief that we have a good case of fraud or at the very least misrepresentation on our hands.  As most of us know, DNA doesn't lie!  Who says that Cary Mullis didn't deserve to win the Nobel Prize for developing PCR!!!!!!!!!

Several months ago, my wife and daughter saw a “really adorable” dog at a school fundraising event.  My wife asked the owner what type of dog it was and she was told “it is a Havanese.” Neither my wife nor I had heard of the breed before but, after doing some Internet research we learned that it is related to the Bichon and is called Havanese because the breed originated in Cuba. As former residents of Miami (we met there) and familiar with all things Cuban my wife and I decided to buy a Havanese puppy for our daughter and two sons (they had been vigorously campaigning for a dog for the past few years).

The first step in our search was to Google the breed and see whether there were any Havanese breeders in New Jersey. Much to our delight, we found five Havanese breeders in New Jersey and no fewer than three were in driving distance from our home. To make a long story short, we purchased a wonderful 10-week old Havanese puppy called Sandy from a private breeder named Grace Abrams who runs Havanese 4Ever in Vincentown, NJ. A couple of days after we brought Sandy home, my wife took her to her first veterinary appointment and disappointed to learn that Sandy had serious case of ear mites and a round worm infestation. While we concerned, we didn’t think much of this (although Grace had certified that the puppy was healthy and disease free) and went on with our newly-minted Havanese existence.

After living with Sandy for several months (and spending way too much money to build a fence for one dog), my wife and I decided that Sandy needed a companion to play with. Imagine our delight, when we saw that Grace was looking for a home for a young, Havanese male that she had recently acquired “from a couple relocating from North Carolina to New York City.”  After seeing the ad on Grace’s website, my wife, Sandy and I drove back to Vincentown examine the “9 month old healthy Havanese male” that was dumped on Grace’s door step. Grace informed us that she had been caring for the dog for two weeks and that he was filthy and in very bad condition when she first got him. Without any hesitation, we adopted the dog (Moose) for $400 (after Grace knocked off $150 because of the ear mites and worms with Sandy) and thought all was right with the world. We also received some nominal paperwork including Moose’s veterinary records, his pedigree papers and a receipt.

A couple of days after we brought Moose home, my wife took him to the vet for a physical examination. Much to her dismay, the veterinarian told my wife that Moose was not 9 months old but closer to 3 years, had a bad case of gingivitis (and 4 loose teeth that needed to be pulled) and an ear and urinary tract infections. After receiving three frantic phone calls from my wife who was in tears, I contacted Grace and informed her that things were not right with Moose and that we wanted our money back. Again, to make a long story short, Grace refused to give us a refund unless we brought Moose back to her. Of course, we didn’t comply and Moose (who is a wonderful, loyal and sweet dog) is now an official member of the family. That said, with the help of a pet advocacy organization, NJCAPSA which has been investigating puppy mill fraud in NJ, we learned that Grace Abrams is a member of a notorious ring of South Jersey dog grifters run by her mother Donna Roberts who in 2007 was found guilty under NJ Statute 4:22-26L on three of five counts of animal cruelty.

Grace aka Dawn Abrams and her mother Donna Roberts purportedly purchases puppies from Pennsylvania Amish and Mennonite puppy mills (allegedly run by a nefarious character named David Zimmerman) and sell them from Boston to Washington DC as well as locally in New Jersey. Although never convicted of fraud, numerous complaints have been filed against Donna and Grace claiming that they supplied customers with falsified veterinary certificates and bogus AKC or other registration papers. Sometimes, Robert Cohen, an odious licensed New Jersey veterinarian, issues “health certificates” for Donna/Dawn’s puppies and so-called “rescue animals”. Not surprisingly, Cohen’s name appeared in court documents in several cases of fraud brought against Donna Roberts.

Because of her convictions, Donna Roberts keeps a low profile. Grace/Dawn Abrams is the front person but her mother Donna Roberts actually calls all the shots. Over the years, Donna and Grace/Dawn have sold dogs under the following kennel names: 1) Dark Moon Havanese, Shamong, NJ,  2) Shady Oaks Havanese, Howell NJ, 3) Kissy Face Havanese, Lakewood NJ, 4) Havanese Breeze, Medford NJ, 4) Havanese 4U, Indian Mills, NJ and 5) Havanese 4ever, Vincentown, NJ. Be warned that they also advertise Havanese and other breeds on PetFinder, Craig’s List, Breeders.net, Doggie.com and others pet sites where there are no ad listing charges.

Also, be aware that they are alleged to sell dogs under the following names or aliases:

After we learned about Donna and her co-conspirators, my wife and I (who is an attorney) thoroughly examined the papers that we received for Sandy and Moose from Grace Abrams. Sure enough, no fewer than five of their aliases appeared in various capacities (e.g., owner, seller, breeder etc) throughout our documents. Further, Robert Cohen was the veterinarian of record who signed all of Sandy’s veterinary certificates. Although Moose was billed as a 9 month Havanese we now believe that he is a 2 year old Bichon, Shih Tzu or a mix. We think that he was probably a former breeder dog in a PA puppy mill (since he was not neutered). Sandy is likely a true Havanese but I wouldn’t be surprised that turns out not to be the case.  

I wrote this piece because the emotional and gut-wrenching experience that my family and I have gone through has had a profound effect on me. To that end, I am going to do everything possibly to shut down the operations run by Donna Roberts, Grace/Dawn Abrams and their co-conspirators.  Any suggestions, ideas, help (especially Internet/technology-wise) on how to put these people and their ilk out of business would be greatly appreciated.  Please feel free to repost this piece on any appropriate pet and dog breeder sites or blogs.
