A New Wrinkle to Difficult Interviewing Questions

With unemployment high and the economy showing little sign of improvement, finding a new job has become increasingly challenging. And, not surprisingly, the types of interview questions that hiring managers are beginning to ask prospective job candidates are becoming more intricate and complex. I found interesting examples of this at the  “You’re the Boss” blog sponsored by the New York Times.

In the article, a person who owns a small retail business revealed that he always asks job candidates to describe their most stressful customer experience in previous jobs. The question helps him to ascertain how prospective new employees might cope with difficult situations. Also, it tends to reveals whether or not they speak honestly about their own actions and what their attitudes may be towards customers. Another question that he frequently asks is “Why did you really leave your last job? Were you fired? Did you hate your boss? This is devised to determine whether or not a candidate is being truthful. If the answer is their leaving was “mutual” the owner posits that there is usually more to the story than is being divulged. On the other hand, if the response is “It was time to move on” a follow up question usually is “What does that mean?”

Other examples cited in the post include:

What am I going to hate about you in the next 6 months?

What haven’t I asked that you want me to know about you?

How will we both know in six months that you are succeeding?

Why did you apply for this job?

None of the questions is illegal, improper or out of bounds during a job interview. Consequently, I advise jobseekers to add these new questions to their list of difficult-to-answer interview questions. And, perhaps more importantly, think about legitimate responses to them before your next job interview.

A Guide to Managing Career Change

In this economy, many BioJobBlog readers may find themselves in the unenviable position of having to consider changing careers to find gainful employment. While career counselors like me can offer job seekers ideas about possible alternate or non-traditional careers, actual navigating a career change can be daunting, painful and often times overwhelming. With this in mind, I came across an article on HelpGuide.org that helps to demystify career changes and offers helpful hints (and links to useful articles) that describes how would- be career changers can manage and shepherd the process.

Overview

The first step in considering a career change is to think carefully about what really drives you. You might find it hard to get past thinking about “what pays the most” or “what is most secure,” especially in today’s economy. However, it’s important to first discover your primary interests and passions. This can open doors to careers that you might not have considered. Once you have that foundation, you can start fine tuning your search to the right career. You may be surprised at how you can fit your passions into a certain career!

Explore your options

  • Focus on the things you love to do. What have you dreamed of doing in the past? What do you naturally enjoy doing? Jot down what comes to mind, no matter how improbable it seems.
  • Look for clues everywhere. Take note of projects or topics that stir your compassion or excite your imagination. Reflect on stories of people you admire. Ask yourself why certain activities make you happy, and pay attention to times when you are really enjoying yourself.
  • Be patient. Remember that your search may take some time and you might have to go down a few different roads before finding the right career path. Time and introspection will help you identify the activities you most enjoy and that bring you true satisfaction.

Overcome obstacles to happiness

It’s always challenging to consider a huge change, and there may be many reasons why you may think changing careers is not possible. Here are some common obstacles and how to overcome them:

  • It’s too much work to change careers. Where would I ever begin? Changing careers does require a substantial time investment. However, remember that it does not happen all at once. If you sit down and map out a rough plan of attack, breaking down larger tasks into smaller ones, it is a lot more manageable than you think. And if the payoff is a happier, more successful career, it’s worth it.
  • I’m too old to change careers. I need to stay where I am. If you have worked for a number of years, you may feel that you’ve put too much time and effort into your career to change midstream. Or you may be concerned about retirement and health benefits. However, the more you’ve worked, the more likely you are to have skills you can transfer to a new career. You may also consider planning a transition for after retirement if you are close to receiving a pension or other benefits after a number of years. 
  • I don’t have enough skills to consider a new career. You may be unaware of the skills you have, or underestimate your marketability due to low self esteem. However, you probably have more skills than you think. Consider skills you’ve learned not only from your job but from hobbies, volunteering or other life experiences. And gaining skills is not an all or nothing proposition. You can volunteer once a week or take a night class to move forward, for example, without quitting your current job.
  • In this economy, I’m lucky to have a job. I don’t want to rock the boat. In today’s climate, it might feel like too much of a risk to consider changing careers. However, if you’re unhappy in your current job, doing research on other options will only benefit you in the long run. You may discover a career with a more stable long-term outlook than your current career, for example. And you don’t have to quit your current job until you are confident of your new career path.

Dealing with underemployment and job loss

Being unemployed or underemployed can be tremendously stressful. You may be feeling the pressures of meeting mortgage payments or other financial obligations. You might be feeling ashamed with your family and friends. And a very real loss is that of your identity at work. This is especially true if you have been in the same field for a very long time.

However, unemployment also has a bright side. It gives you the chance to reflect on your career path where you might not have before. If you’ve been considering a new field, now is the time to research and see what might be the right fit for you. You may end up in a much stronger position than if you had originally kept your job.

Identify occupations that match your interests

So how do you translate your interests into a new career? With a little research, you may be surprised at the careers that relate to many of the things you love to do. Many online tools can guide you through the process of self-discovery. Questions, quizzes, and temperament sorters can’t tell you what your perfect career would be, but they can help you identify what’s important to you in a career, what you enjoy doing, and where you excel. One example, frequently used by universities and the government, is the RIASEC/Holland interest scale. It identifies six common areas that people often feel especially drawn to, such as investigative, social, or artistic. Based on these areas, you can browse sample careers that match those interests.

Research specific careers

If you have narrowed down some specific jobs or careers, you can find a wealth of information online, from description of positions to average salaries to estimated future growth. This will also help you figure out the practical priorities: How stable is the field you are considering? Are you comfortable with the amount of risk? Is the salary range acceptable to you? What about commute distances? Will you have to relocate for training or a new job? Will the new job affect your family?

Get support and information from others

While you can glean a lot of information from research and quizzes, there’s no substitute for information from someone currently working in your chosen career. Talking to someone in the field gives you a real sense of what type of work you will actually be doing and if it meets your expectations.  What’s more, you will start to build connections in your new career area, helping you land a job in the future. Does approaching others like this seem intimidating? It doesn’t have to be. Networking and informational interviewing are important skills that can greatly further your career.

You may also consider career counseling or a job coach, especially if you are considering a major career shift. Sometimes impartial advice from others can open up possibilities you hadn’t considered.

Evaluate your strengths and skills

Once you have a general idea of your career path, take some time to figure out what skills you have and what skills you need. Remember, you’re not completely starting from scratch—you already have some skills to start. These skills are called transferable skills, and they can be applied to almost any field. Some examples include:

  • management and leadership experience
  • communication (both written and oral)
  • research and program planning
  • public speaking
  • conflict resolution and mediation
  • managing your time effectively
  • computer literacy
  • foreign language fluency

Identify transferable career skills

  • Don’t limit yourself to experiences only at work. When you are thinking about your skills, consider all types of activities including volunteering, hobbies and life experiences. For example, even if you don’t have formal leadership or program planning experience, founding a book club or organizing a toy drive are ways that you have been putting these skills into practice.
  • List your accomplishments that might fit in. Don’t worry about formatting these skills for a resume at this point. You just want to start thinking about what skills you have. It can be a tremendous confidence booster to realize all of the skills you’ve developed.
  • Brainstorm with trusted friends, colleagues or mentors. They might remind you of transferable skills you might have forgotten, and help you think of how you might want to articulate these skills in the future.

Develop new skills and acquire work experience

If your chosen career requires skills or experience you lack, don’t despair. There are many ways to gain needed skills.  While learning, you’ll also have an opportunity to find out whether or not you truly enjoy your chosen career and also make connections that could lead to your dream job.

  • Utilize your current position. Look for on-the-job training or opportunities to do projects that develop new skills. See if your employer will pay part of your tuition costs.
  • Identify resources in the community. Find out about programs in your community. Community colleges or libraries often offer low cost opportunities to strengthen skills such as computers, basic accounting, or how to start a business. Local Chambers of Commerce, Small Business Administrations, or state job development programs also are excellent resources.
  • Volunteer or work as an intern. Some career skills can be acquired by volunteering or doing an internship. This has the added benefit of getting you in contact with people in your chosen field. Visit Volunteering and its Surprising Benefits: Helping  Yourself while Helping Others
  • Take classes. Some fields require specific education or skills, such as an educational degree or specific training.  Don’t automatically rule out more education as impossible. Many fields have accelerated programs if you already have some education, or you may be able to do night classes or part-time schooling so that you can continue to work. Some companies even offer tuition reimbursements if you stay at the company after you finish your education.
  • Consider starting your own business If you’re getting worn down by long commutes or a difficult boss, the thought of being your own boss can be very appealing. And it may be you can find your perfect niche even in a slower economy. Depending on the specialty, some companies prefer to streamline their ranks and work with outside vendors. However, it is especially important to do your homework and understand the realities of business ownership before you jump in.

Make sure you are committed and passionate to your business idea. You  will be spending many long hours getting started, and it may take a while for your  business to pay off.

Research is critical. Take some time to analyze your area of interest. Are you filling an unmet need? Especially if you are considering an online business, how likely is your area to be outsourced? What is your business plan, and who are your potential investors? Learn more in the resources section below.

Expect limited or no earnings to start. Especially in the first few months, you are building your base and may have start up costs that offset any profit initially. Make sure you have a plan on how you will get through that time.

Final thoughts             

  • Pace yourself and don’t take on too much at once. Career change doesn’t happen overnight, and it is easy to get overwhelmed with all the steps to successfully change careers. However, you will get there with commitment and motivation. Break down large goals into smaller ones, and try to accomplish at least one small thing a day to keep the momentum going.
  • Don’t rush into a change because of unhappiness in your current job. If you are stressed and unhappy in your current job, or unemployed, you might be feeling a lot of pressure to make a quick change. However, if you don’t do enough research, you might end up in an even worse position than before, with the added stress of a new position and new learning curve.
  • Ease slowly into your new career. Take time to network, volunteer and even work part time in your new field before committing fully. It will not only be an easier transition, but you will have time to ensure you are on the right path and make any necessary changes before you are working full time in your new field.
  • Take care of yourself. You might be feeling so busy with the career transition that you barely have time to sleep or eat. However, managing stress, eating right, and taking time for sleep, exercise and especially loved ones will ensure you have the stamina for the big changes ahead.

Bristol-Myers Squibb to Cut 840 Jobs Worldwide

Several months ago, I posted an article that suggested that layoffs in the pharmaceutical industry were beginning to slow. Apparently executives at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) didn’t read my blog post (I believe that they have in the past) and today announced that the company will eliminate 840 jobs or 3 per cent of its 28,000 member workforce.

The company says the jobs will be eliminated over the next six months, and the cuts could be spread across all its businesses and geographic locations. A BMS spokesperson indicated that company executives are still reviewing the entire organization to determine which jobs will be eliminated. The new round of layoffs is intended to further streamline the company. Interestingly, BMS purchased Seattle-based Zymogenetics for $885 million two weeks ago.

These cuts coupled with small biotechnology company acquisitions and a recent stock buyback initiative suggests that the company may be positioning itself for sale or merger. BMS’ top selling drug Plavix which represents almost 40 percent of the company’s revenue stream will lose patent protection in 2011.

The Convergence of Pharma Celebrity Spokespersons and Web 2.0

Over the past few months, a number of celebrities have agreed to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies pitch their products in direct-to-consumer advertising campaigns. Perhaps this is related to the economic downturn and these actors are having trouble finding high paying gigs to support their lifestyles. Alternatively, their motives may be altruistic or they or one of their loved ones may suffer from a life-altering or threatening illness.

The latest addition to the celebrity pitchperson parade is the soap opera diva Susan Lucci. After her husband Helmut Huber was unexpectedly diagnosed a decade ago with atrial fibrillation—a type of irregular heartbeat that increase the risk of stroke five-fold, Lucci yesterday announced that she and her husband would partner with Boehringer Ingelheim the National Stroke Association and StopAfib.org to launch a new education campaign to raise awareness of atrial fibrillation. Financial terms of the relationship were not disclosed.

In other news, Amgen and Pfizer yesterday announced the joint launch of "Psophisticated Style:  A Guide to Everyday Style and Psoriasis™," an online resource, providing a wealth of style advice specifically for people with psoriasis.

The new online presence will be hosted by B-list celebrity Tim Gunn, mentor to the designers on TV's "Project Runway" and chief creative officer of Liz Claiborne, Inc. and dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, M.D., the style guide includes five videos, which illustrate various style issues for individuals with psoriasis. Practical and insightful highlights from each video are also available and can be printed.  The new website is well designed and has a decidedly web 2.0 look and feel to it. And, you can even follow Psophisticated Style on Facebook and share the site with your friends!

According to a press release Addressing Psoriasis™ was developed to inspire people with plaque psoriasis to actively manage their condition, be more confident and not allow the condition to inhibit their everyday style. 

Despite the slow uptake, Pharma’s attitude on the use of social media is beginning to shift. Last week, Eli Lilly &Co announced the launch of Lilly Pad a blog and twitter feed designed to provide information and helpful tips to patients with diabetes. Yesterday at the Business Development Institute’s HealthCare Social Communications Leadership Forum in Manhattan, Todd Siesky , Public Relations Manager, Roche Diabetes Care described an innovative and creative initiative (started two years ago) to establish a network of influential bloggers in the diabetes space. The bloggers are not paid and do not benefit financially from their interactions with the company. Roche interacts with the blogging network on a quarterly basis and has held two summits to bring the bloggers together to brainstorm and interact with one another (Roche covers airfare and hotel accommodations).

Also, Ted Phelan, Senior Regional Scientific Manager Medical Affairs at Astra Zeneca gave an illuminating talk about his company’s efforts to build a physician community in the gastrointestinal therapeutic space. Ted’s take away from his impromptu presentation (the originally scheduled Astra Zeneca representative couldn’t attend) was you won’t be successful unless you understand the needs of community members (he is married to a physician).

For those of you who may not closely follow the pharmaceutical social media space, building Facebook fan pages and creating a Twitter feed are no longer de rigueur. Instead, the next big thing is building company-sponsored, unbranded, online patient and physician communities around different therapeutic indications! Move over Patients Like Me, there may be some new kids on the block in the very near future!

A Benefit of Climate Change? Fewer Cases of Plague Reported in the US

About 10 to 20 Americans are afflicted with bubonic plague each year, and 1 to 3 die from the infection according to statistics compiled by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA. The natural reservoir of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that causes plague, are  prairie dogs and ferrets, and fleas that infest those colonies can transfer it to squirrels, rats and mice, who like to live close to humans and their flea-carrying pets. Most of the reported cases of plaque occur in the so-called Four Corners, where Utah, Arizon, New Mexico and Colorado meet, and most victims live in rodent-infested rural dwellings. 

A study in this month’s issue of The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene tracked climatic conditions in 195 counties in 13 Western states, from Washington to Texas, that reported even one plague case since 1950. Cases have dropped over time, and the study concluded that rising nighttime temperatures since 1990 had helped. Warmer nights melt winter snowpacks earlier, leading to drier soil in rodent burrows. When the soil gets too dry, fleas die and transmission of Y. pestis is much reduced. 

While a reduction in the incidence of bubonic plague may be a good thing, it certainly doesn’t offset the potential catastrophic effects that may result if global warming is not kept in check! 

Despite the fearsome reputation the disease earned in the Dark Ages, plague can be easily treated with antibiotics if it is caught early enough. Also, improvements in sanitation and urban livings conditions has relegated plague to be classified as an endemic and ancient disease.

More Seniors Flocking to Social Media: Are Online Social Networking Sites Passé?

A recent report published by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that in the last year, social networking services have nearly doubled in popularity in Americans over the age of 50. Interesting, there were virtually no inroads among those aged 18 to 29. The spike in popularity also includes those over 65 years old who are twice as likely this year as compared with last to say that they belonged to social networking sites.

The authors of the report suggest a few reasons for the increasing popularity of social networking among seniors (aside from the observation that older people are slower overall to adopt technological innovations). 

First, social networking sites provide a rare opportunity to bridge the generational divide; for example grandparents and grandchildren can keep track of each other or share family photos on a single network like Facebook. Second, many older Americans use Facebook and even Twitter to reconnect with people from their past. Finally, social networking sites have been around for almost a decade and there are growing signs that younger folks are moving beyond social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to the next big thing (whatever that may be).

While online networking sites may have begun to outlive their usefulness for social activities, there is trend toward the use of these sites for professional purposes including job searches and access to information. LinkedIn and BioCrowd are two good examples of this type of online professional networking sites.

FYI, I rarely visit Facebook and occasionally have time for Twitter (I turned 57 this past July). Most of my online time is spent on LinkedIn and BioCrowd looking for new contacts and access to interesting information about the life sciences industry.

FDA Guidance on the Use of Social Media May Not Be Complete Until 2012!

Mark Senak, author of the EyeonFDA blog and a feisty social media advocate and enthusiast today reported that the long awaited FDA guidelines for the use of social media by life sciences companies might not be completed until 2012. 

Mark, who is attending the Food and Drug Law Institute Advertising and Promotion Conference being held in Washington, D.C. (#FDLIAP), based his timeline on remarks made by during presentations by a couple of FDA employees from the Division of Drug Marketing, Advertising and Communications (DDMAC). According to Mark:

“A process begun in 2009 may see a milestone in 2010 with issuance of draft guidance, followed by commentary and revision and the issuance of a final of what will be much guidance, apparently.  A three year "event.”

Further, Mark offered this assessment:

“The Internet and social media landscape moves at the speed of light.  Consider that Twitter only came into existence three years ago.  The development of each new platform introduces new questions into the equation.  Consider the frequency and with what depth and breadth consumers consult the Internet and social media for health care information, and we have a priority that demands something faster than a three year event.”

While I agree with Mark that FDA should act faster to develop guidelines for the use of social media for promotional and non-promotional purposes, the existing guidelines for print and broadcast media are sufficient for companies (which abide by DDMAC regulations) to launch successful social media campaigns. A great example of this is Novo Nordisk’s novel Twitter campaign entitled “Race with Insulin” in which professional race car driver Charlie Kimball tweets about his use of Novo’s insulin products.  Novo contends that the campaign helps to dispel the notion that persons with type I diabetes are limited in what they can do personally and professionally (it also helps to sell more insulin!)

Some industry insiders and bloggers think that Novo’s Twitter campaign may be inappropriate and ill-advised. Like it or not, the Race with Insulin Twitter campaign is compliant with existing DDMAC regulations and no different than many other direct-to-consumer advertising campaigns that use paid company spokespersons. Personally, I think that criticism of the campaign is nothing more than “sour grapes,” i.e. Novo figured it out before other pharma marketers did!

The lack of FDA guidance on the use of social media will certainly hinder and perhaps deter other pharma companies from leveraging the true power of social media. However, the old adage “where there is a will, there is way” is particularly apt for those companies that are seriously considering social media in the absence of any notable regulatory guidance on the subject.

Abbott to Shed 3,000 Jobs

The Pharmalot Blog today reported that Abbott will be cutting about 3,000 jobs. The downsizing comes about a year after Abbott purchased Solvay Pharmaceuticals for about 6.2 billion but failed last month to find a buyer for the Solvay vaccine unit (which was expected to fetch about $600 million). 

According to the post, most of the jobs will be eliminated in R&D, manufacturing and commercial operations mainly at former Solvay Pharmaceutical sites in the Netherlands and Germany. Also, Solvay’s current US headquarters in Marietta Georgia will be closed in the near future.

Abbott has approximately 90,000 employees worldwide. While the recession may be officially over the job cuts continue and unemployment continues to rise.

How Online Career Networking Can Help You Land a Job

It is well established that many scientist are not particularly adept at social interactions and are notoriously poor at networking. Contrary to popular belief these deficiencies are not genetic and likely result from the erroneous notion that scientists don’t need career network to advance their work or careers.

There is no question that face-to-face networking is an acquired skill and that practice is necessary to master it. However, the advent of Google search and social media platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter permits even the novice jobseeker to establish an online network—in the absence of a real life one—that may be useful in a job search or future career development. To that end, I came across a 2008 post written by Trent Ham that offers insights and tactics on how to incorporate online networking into a successful job search.

Let’s start with the big question.

Why?

What is the point of doing online networking for your career? How is it any better than simply keeping in touch with people you know via email or at meetings? Isn’t stuff like LinkedIn or Facebook a waste of time, or at least not worth the time you invest in it?

Online networking tools serve two purposes, really.

First, they make it easy for people to find you – or at least find the information about you that you want to be found. Once you set up a proper profile at a social networking site, it’s often the first thing that shows up about you on search engines. Thus, when people go searching for information about you, you can have a lot of control over the information that they find.

Second, they allow you to keep tabs on other people – and allow other people to keep tabs on you. Let’s say, for example, that you’re starting a new project that might interest a lot of people in your field – and you might want input from some of them. Is it easier to collect all their email addresses then send a blanket email to all of them or to just simply update your online networking tool?

Similarly, if you’ve set up such tools properly, you can effortlessly and automatically follow such news and updates about others in your field, which can automatically alert you to any interesting changes without having to hope that that person remembered to send it to you.

Together, these things add up to tons and tons of opportunities to connect with people without having to invest a ton of time continually tracking people down.

Tactic #1: Just Use Google
One problem that many people have with doing this is that there seems to be a giant pile of services available for people to connect to others. Should I use Twitter? Should I use Facebook? Should I use LinkedIn?

Really, though, there’s only one you need to worry about. And that’s Google.

When people want to find other people online, they turn to Google. They type in that name, click on the first few links, and see what they can find out.

That means your focus shouldn’t be so much on which of these services to use. It should be to make sure you’re controlling that top search result on Google.

How can you do that? You need to have a page that’s (a) fully open to the public and (b) linked to by a lot of other people.

Based on what I’ve observed, for professional purposes, the best tool for that is LinkedIn, so if I were just getting started with things, I’d use LinkedIn. Facebook has more users, but it’s a “walled garden,” meaning the general public cannot read your profile. If you’re focusing solely on professional material, that’s actually a pretty big disadvantage.

Tactic #2: Detail Your Profile
When you sign up for such a service, the first step is to add appropriate detail to your profile. The key word here is appropriate.

The purpose for doing this is to attract professional connections, so keep it professional. Describe your career. Enter all of the relevant information and include as much detail as you can, including past places of employment, organizations you’re involved with (that you’d want to share professionally), where you went to school, and so on. Make especially sure to describe your current work (again, in as much detail as you can). Be sure to share it all publicly, too, so that you can easily be found on Google searches.

The more information you provide – particularly interesting information – the more likely it is that people will take an interest in you, follow you, and contact you for further connection, which is exactly what you want.

Tactic #3: Find People You Know (Or Want To Know)
Once you’re in place, start searching the site for people you know and establish connections with them. You may not know anyone – that’s fine – but if you can at least establish a few connections, you’re off on the right foot.

You might want to search whole companies, like your own, just to get a list of people, so you can quickly identify people that you may want to link up with. Don’t be afraid to connect with people above you in rank – or even below you – but focus on connecting to those that might actually have value in that connection. Don’t just connect for the sake of connecting or else you’ll suffer from needless overload.

Tactic #4: Invite Your Friends To Join
So, you signed up at LinkedIn (or whatever site you’ve chosen to use), filled in your profile, and located a few people you know. Now what?

These tools work better if you know lots of people using the tools, so email a bunch of your work contacts. Send them the URL of your LinkedIn page, along with perhaps the URLs of some other people most of them might be interested in, and encourage them to sign up. If people already know that they have at least a few connections in the bag, they’re much more likely to sign up for such a service.

Tactic #5: Keep People Reminded Through Other Means
Once you’re established there, make an effort to remind people through other mediums about your profile page, so they can follow you, too. I’d encourage you to stick a link to your profile in the signature of your emails as well as into the profile of any other online services you might use (like Facebook, for example).

What this does is it gives people many opportunities to visit your page and keep you in their mind – and that’s a pure benefit for you.

Tactic #6: Keep An Eye Out
Once you’ve established a profile and a lot of connections, it’s worth setting your basic page on the site as a bookmark so you can keep up with what’s happening with the people you’re connected to. I tend to look at what’s happening with my connections on various sites every other day or so, just to keep tabs with them.

For the most part, I don’t do anything with the updates – I just try to keep track of them. I usually send congratulations in response to big news and occasional follow-up questions, but I usually try to avoid too much follow-up (see #8 for why).

Tactic #7: Update Regularly
I also make an effort to update my own profile whenever there’s something significant to note. Whenever something happens that’s significant enough for me to wish to contact people professionally, I make sure to update any relevant social networking pages with a global update (so that everyone can see it and anyone who follows me or is connected is alerted to it).

Of course, there’s a fine line here – too much stuff can overburden the people connected to you. To mitigate that, I keep the update count down to the serious stuff – things that I would actually bother to contact others about, such as major project changes, changing jobs, the birth of a child, or another major event.

Tactic #8: Don’t Get Bogged Down
Ideally, you find yourself in a situation with a lot of connections, which means a lot of people are keeping tabs with what you’re doing. The danger in that is that it’s tempting to get involved in a lot of conversations – and that turns the social networking tool into an unproductive time suck.

My suggestion: avoid long conversations on the site. If you see something truly compelling, contact that person directly off the site. If it’s not compelling enough move on and don’t waste your time!

Tactic #9: Add Value
There is one other reason I add updates to such social sites, and that’s when they add direct value to the people following me. If I find a truly great resource or piece of information that many others in my field will find valuable, I add an update letting others know about it.

Why do this? Why share something of value so easily? If you share truly valuable things, people will come to ascribe value to you – and that will stick in their minds. Do it regularly enough with stuff that’s truly valuable and people will share valuable things with you – information, important news, and so on.

Tactic #10: Follow Up
Most of these tactics don’t require much time, and so it can be easy to just put up the profile, check in every once in a while, and not think about it.

If you just do that, however, you may miss out on opportunity. Thus, I’d suggest two methods for regular follow-up on your profile.

First, set the site as a default page in your browser. This way, checking the page becomes part of your normal routine. You can often integrate a number of pages into a single iGoogle start page – that’s the tactic I use.

Second, check your own profile regularly and make sure it’s updated. Don’t let it slag with out-of-date information. Check it once a month or so and make sure that correct, current, and relevant information is easily found by people searching for you.

Follow these ten tactics and you’ll be using online networking to great career advantage.

Childhood Disease Vaccination Rates, Autism and Gardasil

Several weeks ago I posted an article about the State of New Jersey’s egregiously low childhood diseases vaccination rates. I received a number of comments from anti-vaccine activists that were downright nasty and pejorative (mainly accusing me of not being thorough with my research and facts). My favorite comment (shown below) was left by someone named Olga whose e-mail address was bogus

FYI Olga, Hepatitis B is typically transmitted via blood and other secretions and while it may sexually-transmitted it is by no means the only route. Furthermore, the assertion because it may be transmitted sexually that it has nothing to do with children demonstrates your lack of knowledge and understanding of infectious diseases! Maybe you ought to do your homework before commenting??????????

Nevertheless, despite the growing traction of the anti-vaccination movement in New Jersey, I am happy to report that according to this week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report published by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta,

“U.S. immunization rates for the most common childhood vaccines continue to remain near or above the target level of 90% coverage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday. Rates for the newest vaccines, including hepatitis A, hepatitis B and rotavirus, also continue to grow. Less than 1% of children had not received any vaccines.”

In other vaccination-related news, the CDC released the results of a new study that found that prenatal and infant exposure to thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative used in some vaccines, does not increase risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Despite the fact that close to 10 independent studies were unable to establish a link between childhood vaccines and autism, anti-vaccination activists continue to insist that it does. What is more mind-boggling about this claim is that the data used to confirm the link between autism and childhood vaccination fabricated the data and is under federal investigation for scientific misconduct! While I feel for the parents of autistic children who are seeking explanations for their child’s illness, perpetrating the bogus link between autism and childhood vaccination is dangerous and not in the best interest of the health of all Americans.

Finally, sales of Gardisil, the cervical cancer (anti-HPV) vaccine launched by Merck four years ago, have been flat and in some places, declining. Although sales of Gardisil reach $1.1 billion nine months after launch, many analysts believe that Merck will struggle to reach $1.0 billion in the years to come. 

The likely culprit for the decline is the vaccination schedule required for complete immunity—a series of three injections over 6 months. Many women forget or fail to complete the series. According to the CDC while 44% of teenagers were vaccinated with Gardisil in 2009, only 27% received all three of the doses. In addition to the less than convenient immunization regimen, analysts contend that there are other shortcomings that have affected Gardasil sales. These include:

1. People are spending less on medicine in general

Three shots of Gardasil cost $400 and because children aren’t required to be immunized with Gardasil for school, many parents opt out;

2. Some parents aren’t comfortable vaccinating young children against HPV

Some parents contend that Gardasil promote promiscuity because HPV is sexually transmitted. This misguided notion doesn’t make sense to me. At some point, all children have sex; why wouldn’t you want to protect your daughter from possibly developing cervical cancer after she become sexually active (at any age)?

3. Merck couldn’t counter the bad press about Gardasil

In 2008, the New York Post published an article about a woman whose daughter died after getting the Gardasil series. Other articles like this one have recently appeared. While no one linked Gardasil to the cause of death, a fierce debate over its safety continues today. Also, Merck’s failed lobbying campaign to get Gardasil on the required childhood vaccination list and the disastrous Vioxx scandal didn’t help to assuage people’s concerns about Merck’s veracity. Finally, the recent launch of GlaxoSmithKline’s cervical cancer vaccine called Cervarix (which has a much better immunization protocol) is beginning to cut into Gardasil sales.

Despite ongoing assertions by the anti-vaccination movement that childhood vaccines are unsafe, a growing number of medical and scientific studies confirm that childhood vaccines are safe and efficacious and are in the best interest of continued good American public health.

Ho-Hum: Another Day, Another Pharmaceutical Company Joins the Social Media Fracas

The ever watchful Mark Senak of the highly informative EyeonFDA blog today reported that Eli Lilly had taken the social media plunge by creating a twitter account (@Lillypad) and also launching a blog cleverly entitled the LillyPad (get it; pad=launching point etc and the word pad is hot because of the iPAD). Ah, those clever pharmaceutical marketers; they never miss a thing!

As Mark points out in his post, Lilly had previously launched a YouTube Channel in 2008 called LillyDiabetes that almost immediately disappeared after he first blogged about it! According to the EyeonFDA post Lilly launched the blog and joined Twitter

"[b]ecause we feel passionately about a lot of issues that are important to our company and our industry, and we know there's plenty of passion well beyond our own walls.  Policy issues like health care reform have been top-of-mind with the public for a long time.  And industry watchers are placing an increased premium on trends like corporate citizenship.  These are important dialogues, and we're happy to provide a forum and participate."

However, as Mark aptly posited in his post, why are we so amazed when a pharmaceutical company launches a blog or engages in a social media campaign? After all, recent research indicates that nearly one-third of companies are blogging and that number is expected to increase to 43 percent by 2012. In fact, pharmaceutical company blogs are quickly becoming de rigueur. So, don’t be surprised if other companies jump on the social media bandwagon over the coming months. Maybe in the future the launch of a pharmaceutical blog, Facebook page or Twitterfeed may no longer be big news or even worthy of a blog post!

A quick perusal of the LillyPad blog reveals that many of the posts deal with issues like improving math and science education, job creation, American innovation, and healthcare solutions. Interestingly, many of these posts are consistent with recent public statements made by Lilly’s CEO John Lechleiter, PhD. It would be great if the LillyPad blog continues to post articles that provide Lilly stakeholders with insights into what management is thinking. This will certainly go a long way to help to create a “conversation’ between the blog and its followers: something that is critical to the success of any corporate social media campaign.

The New Sequencing War: The Cocoa (Chocolate) Genome

A collaborative research team led by scientists at the candy maker (M&Ms, Snickers, Milky Way) Mars, the U.S. Department of AgricultureAgricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) and IBM—announced this morning that they have successfully completed a preliminary cacao genome sequence, a map of the crop that supplies the majority of the world's cocoa for the manufacture of chocolate and other food products. The Mars group announcement upstaged a second research group—a consortium composed of Hershey, Pennsylvania State University and the French government—that was working furiously to complete its version of the cocoa sequence. BioJobBlog covered the initial announcement about the sequencing project made by the Mars group back in 2008.

While the race to sequence the cocoa genome was not as intense and bitter as the one between Celera and the Human Genome Project to sequence the human genome, the competition between the Mars and Hershey to be the first to announce the completed genome had similar trappings. Initially, there had been discussions between the two groups to work collaboratively on the cocoa genome. But after some deliberation the Mars team decided to “go it alone.”

At present, about 70 percent of the world crop is grown in West Africa by millions of small growers. With the cocoa sequence in hand, scientists believe that they can use molecular biology to improve yields and create cocoa varieties that are more resistant to diseases. For example, a fungal disease known as witches’ broom almost decimated the entire Brazilian cocoa group several years ago. Improving yields and making cocoa more resistant to infection may help to bring the cost of cocoa-based products like chocolate in the future. Another benefit may be improving the taste or increasing the amount of anti-aging flavonoids found in chocolate.

The cocoa genome contains about 420 million base pairs as compared with the human genome which contains roughly 3 billion base pairs. The Mars group edged out the Hershey-led group because it started earlier and mainly relied on fast, second generation DNA sequencers made by Illumina and 454. While Mars can claim victory because it finished first, the Hershey-derived sequence will be valuable to corroborate Mars’ preliminary sequence. Like everything else in science, research results must be independently confirmed before they are accepted by the wider scientific community.

Genzyme v. Sanofi-Aventis: The Plot Thickens

Yesterday, Genzyme announced it would cut about 1,000 jobs worldwide as part of a restructuring plan. In addition, company spokespersons indicated that the company may outsource some of the eliminated permanent position and impose a hiring freeze. As part of its restructuring plan, the company plans on eliminating about 10 percent of its 12,800-employee workforce by 2012. It is unclear how many of the 4,500 US employees will lose their jobs.

In addition to the job cuts, the company announced that it had agreed to sell its diagnostic testing unit (reproductive and genetic testing) to Laboratory Corp of America for $925 million in cash. Henri Termeer, Genzyme’s beleaguered CEO also announced that the company’s other two units, molecular diagnostics and pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturing on also on the block and will be sold.

While Termeer insists that the job cuts and sale of non-core business units has nothing to do with Sanofi-Aventis’ attempt to purchase the company, many analysts believe that these measures are being taken to induce Sanofi to sweeten its $69 per share takeover bid. The additional monies garnered from the layoffs and division sales, will allow Genzyme to strengthen its stock position and bolster its cash reserves to defend against a possible hostile takeover attempt by Sanofi. 

The demise of Genzyme, once one of the most highly regarded and ethical biotechnology company in the world is directly linked to manufacturing problems at its Boston-based facility. The ongoing and protracted quality problems at the plant resulted in a consent decree by the US FDA and penalties totaling about $175 million. As most quality experts will tell you, systemic quality control and assurance issues generally stem from a lack of commitment to quality by senior management; in this case Termeer! 

Despite repeated request for his resignation, Termeer, who has run Genzyme for the past 25 years or so, has steadfastly refused to relinquish his post. Instead of stepping down to save the company, Termeer has chosen to “take the ship” down with him; the sure sign of an out-of-touch CEO who apparently was willing to sacrifice the reputation and worth of a company for entirely self-serving reasons.

Is Online Learning Really a Key to Better Education?

A study financed by the US Department of Education which compared the effectiveness of online vs. classroom-based teaching for the past 12 years found that online learning on average beat face-to-face instruction by a modest but statistically significant margin. Not surprisingly, Bill Gates (a Harvard drop out) believes that online learning will ultimately replace much college classroom teaching because he thinks “college needs to be place-based.” In other words, teaching needs to be directly delivered to the students who may be a difference places at different times. 

But, recent research published by David Figlio an economist at Northwestern University (in association with the National Bureau of Economics) found that live, classroom instruction was superior to Internet-based lecture videos for an introductory economics students.

The results were obtained in a head-to-head experiment that compared the grades achieved by 312 online students and those taught in a traditional classroom setting in an introductory economics course taught at a major unnamed state university. Interestingly, Hispanic online students’ grades fell nearly a full grade lower than Hispanic taught in a traditional classroom. Moreover, male students performed almost a half a grade worse than their classroom-based counterparts and low achievers, who had college grade point averages below the university mean also performed more poorly. Finally, online female students outperformed online male students.

The researchers assert that the differences that they observed could not be attributed to computer replacing the traditional tutorial-style human teaching environment because the lecture hall used in the experiment was a very large one that seated hundreds of students at one time. Initially, Figlio thought that the flexibility of online courses—the ability to go back and revisit course materials when time permitted—would give online learning an edge over traditional learning environments. However, based on the results of the study he contends that “the time-shifting convenience of the Web made it easier for students to put off viewing lectures and cram just before the test; a tactic that likely may not produce the best results! 

That may partly explain some of the discrepancies uncovered in the study, but why do online male students perform worse than their online female counterparts? The answer likely lies in the commonly-held belief (fact?) that female students are superior to male students in time management, organizational skills and commitment. Whether or not this is true, there is emerging evidence which suggests that online learning may not be an appropriate learning style for some students despite it obvious advantage of convenience. That said, it is important to note that the traditional didactic methods of instruction commonly employed by most secondary and postsecondary educators is also lacking and needs to be modified to create better learning environments.

While online training is gaining in popularity—and in my opinion, a great adjunctive tool—it will never replace those “magical teaching moments” that often spontaneously arise in a face-to-face classroom setting from student-instructor interactions and student-student repartee.

The Job Slog: Can a Larger Salary Really Buy You Happiness?

I am sure that many BioJobBlog readers have heard the old adage that money can’t buy happiness. The corollary to this statement is that it [money] sure helps! However, in a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, two Princeton University economists determined that there may indeed be something of a relationship between income and happiness. 

After analyzing more than 450,000 responses to the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, a daily survey of 1,000 US residents conducted by the Gallup Organization the authors concluded that:

When plotted against log income, life evaluation (thoughts that people have about their life when they think about it) rises steadily. Emotional well-being also rises with log income, but there is no further progress beyond an annual income of $75,000. Low income exacerbates the emotional pain associated with such misfortunes as divorce, ill health, and being alone. We conclude that high income buys life satisfaction but not happiness, and that low income is associated both with low life evaluation and low emotional well-being.

According to an article authored by Phyllis Korkki of the New York Times, Kahneman asserts that

“Many people want to make a lot of money, but the benefits of having a high income are ambiguous,” When you are wealthy you are able to buy more pleasures, he said, but a recent study suggests that wealthier people “seem to be less able to savor the small things in life.” He added, “Wanting money is not a recipe for disaster, but wanting money and not getting it — that’s a good recipe for disaster”

Many job and career counselors contend that working at a high paying but unsatisfying job may not be the best approach to life. For example, Korkki reported that Daniel Pink author and career advisor said that “Looking at lists of careers with the highest salaries tends to be a fool’s game.” Generally, people flourish when they’re doing something they like and what they’re good at” he added. Also, Nicholas Lore, a founder of a successful career coaching firm said “It all depends on priorities. Some people are willing to make lifestyle changes because the intrinsic rewards of following a passion or making a difference are more important than a high salary in an unenjoyable career.”

I think that the true relationship between money and happiness is best described by Lore when he said “Many people equate success with a high income, but, “How can someone say they’re successful if they’re not happy doing their work? To me, that’s not success.”

Interview Questions That US Employers Are Not Allowed to Ask

I counsel a large number of foreign students as part of my career development activities. Over the years, I learned that questions regarding a job candidate’s personal information like nationality, religion, marital status etc are permissible and perfectly legal in countries other than the US. Consequently, I decided that it may be instructive for job candidates to learn what questions are acceptable and those that are not during a face-to-face interview for positions at US companies. 

Much of the information presented in the post was gleaned from an article written by Porcshe Moran of Yahoo Finance.

The following are examples of illegal questions that SHOULD NEVER be uttered by interviewers during a US job interview.

1. How old are you?

The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), protects individuals who are 40 or older from being discriminated against in the workplace in favor of younger employees. There is no federal protection in place to protect workers younger than 40 from age discrimination. To determine if you are legally eligible to perform a job, employers are allowed to ask if you are over the age of 18.

2. Are you married?

Questions about marital status are prohibited. Employers might be tempted to ask this question to find out if your relationship could have a negative impact on your work. For example, if you are married you might be more likely to leave the company if your spouse gets a job transferred to a different city. Even a question as seemingly innocent as "Do you wish to be addressed as Mrs., Miss, or Ms.?" is not allowed.

3. Are you a U.S. citizen?

Citizenship and immigration status cannot be used against a potential employee during the hiring process according to The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA). Employers must wait until after a job offer had been extended to require a worker to complete the Employment Eligibility Verification (I-9) Form and submit documentation that proves identity and employment authorization. It is lawful for an employer to ask an interviewee if they are authorized to work in the US.

4. Do you have any disabilities?

This question might seem necessary to determine if a job applicant can perform the required duties, but it is illegal to ask under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Employers cannot discount anyone from a job because of a physical or mental disability. In fact, the law requires that they accommodate disabilities unless they can prove it would cause significant difficulty or expense to do so. Employers also cannot ask you if you have had any past illnesses or operations.

5. Do you take drugs, smoke or drink?

Concerns about drug, alcohol or nicotine addictions are valid as they can impact an employee's quality of work and the rates of a company's health insurance coverage. However, an employer might find themselves in legal trouble if they don't frame questions about these potential problems in a careful manner. They are allowed to ask if you have ever been disciplined for violating company policies about the use of alcohol and tobacco products. They can also ask directly if you use illegal drugs, but an employer can't inquire about your use of prescription medications.

6. What religion do you practice?

Inquires about religious beliefs are a sensitive issue. An interviewer might be curious for scheduling reasons such as holidays that an employee might need off, or if the candidate will be unavailable to work on weekends because of religious obligations. It is illegal to intentionally discriminate against an employee or harass them based on their religious beliefs. Employers are required to accommodate an employee's religious beliefs or practices in regards to things such as dress and grooming policy and flexible scheduling.

7. What is your race?

There is no situation in which questions about an employee's race or skin color should be use to determine their eligibility for a job. This protection is granted under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Employers are permitted to ask an employee to reveal their race on a voluntary basis for affirmative action purposes.

8. Are you pregnant?

Questions about family status tend to affect women the most, but they can also pertain to men in certain situations. Employers might have concerns about an employee taking time off work for pregnancy leave or not having child care arrangements during work hours.

The Pregnancy Discrimination Act states that an employer cannot refuse to hire a pregnant woman because of her pregnancy, because of a pregnancy-related condition, or because of the prejudices of co-workers, clients or customers.

It is, however, lawful for employers to ease their nerves about an employee's availability or commitment to a position by asking about long-term career goals or the ability for an employee to work overtime and travel.

The Bottom Line
It is important to know your rights as an employee. Unlawful questions are not acceptable on applications, during the interview process or in the workplace. Although improper questions by employers might be simple mistakes, they could also be intentional cases of discrimination. 

While it is good to know your “rights,” I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you may be asked these questions during a job interview. Whether or not you respond to the question(s) is up to you. However, if the personal questions that are asked make you uncomfortable, let the interviewer know as professionally as possible that he/she is treading in dangerous territory. After the interview is over, you may want to contact the company’s Human Resources department to report the incident so that future job candidates may avoid similar unpleasant and illegal experiences.

BioScience Layoff Updates

Last week, the outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas reported that layoffs at big pharmaceutical companies had slowed in August. However, while layoffs may have begun to slow at many big pharma companies, they are continuing at several biotechnology and specialty pharmaceutical companies.

In a press release late last week, Roche CEO Severin Schwan announced that the company will review its business and cut costs to offset recent setbacks with some of its key drugs and rising healthcare costs. These setbacks include suspension of clinical trials for ocrelizumab, a mAb-based treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, a rejection of accelerated review of trasttuzumab-DM1 a new breast cancer treatment and a delay in approval for a diabetes drug.

Many of the setbacks have occurred at its biotechnology subsidiary, Genentech. Consequently, much of the costs savings, including restructuring and layoffs will likely occur at Genentech over the next few years. The cutbacks are expected to save the company almost $1.9 billion per year. According to one biotechnology analyst:

"They will mainly be looking at the primary sales force and R&D for cuts, which will be mostly in the United States and Europe. There was overcapacity in the sales team -- numbering around 1,500 in the United States and Europe -- after a recent delay to its diabetes drug candidate taspoglutide and the fact Roche had one of the highest research and development spending rates in the industry offered scope for savings”

In related news, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, PhD, Genentech’s second in command for R&D, yesterday announced that he was leaving Genentech to become President of Rockefeller University. While Dr. Tessier-Lavigne contends that his decision to leave Genentech after 7 years has nothing to do with expected cutbacks and layoffs, his departure signals that big changes are likely at the company in the near future.

Also last week, Endo Pharmaceuticals announced that it would be cutting the size of its sales force. The announcement comes just one month after Endo agreed to purchase Penwest Pharmaceuticals for $144 million. Moreover, the $3.2 billion dollar merger between the biotechnology company Valeant Pharmaceuticals and Biovail is expected to result in a 25 percent reduction of its combined 4,000 employee workforce. Finally, Japanese drug maker Shionogi yesterday announced that it is cutting roughly 50 percent of its US sales force to 350 sales reps.

Although layoffs may have appeared to abate at many big pharma companies, don’t be surprised if new job cuts are announced around the beginning of the US holiday season this year. Also, layoffs will continue at biotechnology and specialty pharma companies as consolidation continues in these sectors.

A Novel Alternate Career Choice

Several years ago a television show appeared on the BBC entitled “Secret Diary of a Call Girl” which follows the life of a seemingly ordinary, but struggling, student named Hannah aka Belle de Jour who, unbeknownst to family and friends, secretly moonlights as a prostitute to make ends meet. The BBC series (which starred the British actress Billie Piper) was based on an anonymously written blog (later books) that began appearing in 2003.

Last November, the author behind the blog and bestselling books revealed herself to be none other than Brooke Magnanti, PhD a researcher in developmental neurotoxicology and cancer epidemiology at a hospital in Bristol, England. And, while a doctoral student in 2003, actually worked as a prostitute (£300 per hour) for an escort service to help pay rent and make ends meet when writing her PhD thesis. At the time, she was already an experienced science blogger and began writing about her experiences on a blog entitled 'Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call Girl' which was later adapted into the books and the television series. 

Magnanti said she was working on a doctoral study for the department of forensic pathology of Sheffield University in 2003 when she began her secret life. "I was getting ready to submit my thesis. I saved up a bit of money. I thought, I'll just move to London, because that's where the jobs are, and I'll see what happens. She added "I couldn't find a professional job in my chosen field because I didn't have my PhD yet. I didn't have a lot of spare time on my hands because I was still making corrections and preparing for the defense and I got through my savings a lot faster than I thought I would"

Dr. Magnanti has no regrets about the 14 months she spent working as a high priced call girl. "I've felt worse about my writing than I ever have about sex for money," she said. "I did have another job at one point, as a computer programmer, but I kept up with my other work because it was so much more enjoyable" she added. Interestingly, Magnanti has kept her day job as a researcher and writes in her spare time.

While this alternate career option may not appeal to most, it certainly was a creative choice that demonstrated at least one scientist’s commitment to “doing whatever it takes” to pursue a scientific career!

Another One Bites the Dust: Bristol Myers Squibb to Acquire the Biotechnology Company Zymogenetics

The New York Times today reported that Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) will acquire Seattle, WA-based Zymogenetics for $885 million or $9.75 per share. The two companies were jointly developing new medicines to treat hepatitis C infections. The $9.75 a share in cash represents an 84 percent premium to Zymogenetics closing stock price on Tuesday.

BMS executives must believe that the jointly-developed hepatitis C product, PEG-interferon lambda will be a winner because the company is usually reluctant to pay such high premium prices for acquisitions. The new PEG-interferon lambda product will have to compete against similar products PEG-Intron (peginterferon alfa-2b, Merck) and Pegasys (peginterferon alfa-2b, Roche) in a highly competitive hepatitis C treatment market currently dominated by Roche. Also, several companies, most notably Vertex Pharmaceuticals, have orally-bioavailable small molecule hepatitis C treatments in late stage clinical development. All of the PEGylated interferons must be administered via injection.

BMS has a variety of marketed treatments for HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B infections. These products, along with its market leading anti-clotting agent Plavix (co-marketed with Sanofi-Aventis) are facing fierce generic competition in the not-to-distant future.

The company’s acquisition of Zymogenetics is another step towards transforming BMS from a small molecule pharmaceutical company into a biotechnology-focused drug maker. In addition to PEG-interferon lambda, Zymogenetics is developing protein-based treatments for surgical bleeding (recombinant human thrombin), metastatic melanoma (IL-21) and atopic dermatitis (IL-31 mAb). 

Zymogenetics was founded in 1981 and is one of Seattle’s largest independent, publicly-traded biotechnology companies. Stay tuned as more consolidation continues in the biotechnology sector.

Sanofi-Genzyme Update: GlaxoSmithKline Isn't Interested

For those of you who can’t tear yourselves away from the ongoing, nail-biting Sanofi Aventis-Genzyme saga, the head of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) R&D, Moncef Slaoui told a French newspaper that GSK will not “step in as a rival bidder for the US biotech Genzyme.”

Slaoui made his remarks at the christenings of a GSK research center in France. “An offer by GlaxoSmithKline for Genzyme does not make sense. It is too expensive” he said. Also, GSK already has a foothold in the orphan disease market through its partnership with JCR Pharmaceuticals. 

As negotiations between Sanofi and Genzyme began to stall over the $69 per share offer tendered by Sanofi, some analysts had predicted that a so-called white knight may enter the bidding war to drive the stock share price higher to the $75 per share wanted by Genzyme.

Today’s announcement by GSK likely produced a collective sigh of relief from Sanofi shareholders. Personally, I think Sanofi would be crazy to let this one get away; the deal is exactly what Sanofi needs to begin to compete in the lucrative biologics market. Until now, Sanofi’s focus has been almost exclusively on small molecule development.

Media Warning about Pfizer's Tygacil Is another Example of Poor Science Reporting

When I saw one of today’s headlines, ‘FDA Warns on Increased Death Risk with Pfizer Antibiotic’ I immediately dropped what I was doing to read the article. Expecting the worse, I learned that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that it was modifying the label for Pfizer’s antibiotic called Tygacil.

The reason for the label changes was new clinical information that showed that patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) and diabetic food infections that are treated with Tygacil are at increased risk of death as compared with those treated with other antibiotic treatments.

"The FDA said it looked at 13 trials with patients given Tygacil for both approved and unapproved indications by type of infection comparing the overall mortality for Tygacil with other antibiotics. Overall, the studies showed death occurred in 4% of patients receiving Tygacil, or 150 out of 3788, and 3% of patients, or 110 of 3646, receiving comparator antibiotics."

While I didn’t find the difference in the mortality rates that shocking, it is important to point out that Tygacil is not an FDA-approved treatment for either VAP or diabetic foot infections. Nevertheless, the antibiotic is routinely used by many infectious diseases physicians as a treatment for both infections. This is because many VAP and diabetic foot infections are caused my multiple drug resistant bacteria and physicians are willing to resort to unapproved treatments (like Tygacil) to treat high risk patients. Put simply, there is generally little choice; either use Tygacil or the patient may die! 

Further, the 1% difference in mortality rates between Tygacil and other antibiotics may not be clinically significant because many of the treated patients are seriously ill and near death anyway. Finally, differences in the mortality were based on retrospective results from clinical studies that were designed to assess the safety and efficacy of Tygacil for indications other than VAP or diabetic foot infections. Consequently, it is difficult to conclusively say whether or not Tygacil is less safe than other antibiotics to treat patients with severe bacterial infections like VAP and diabetic foot.

Nevertheless, Tygacil's label has already been updated to warn doctors about the possible death risk. Pfizer sent a letter dated July 26 to health care professionals detailing the new label. The label change is listed below:

"Alternatives to Tygacil should be considered in patients with severe infections. Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of this product to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:"

The bottom line: the jury is still out on the safety and efficacy of Tygacil as a treatment for VAP and diabetic foot infections. This can only be determined when well controlled, statistically-relevant clinical trials are designed and conducted. While FDA was correct to insist that Pfizer send a note to infectious diseases physicians alerting them of possible increased risks, I don’t think that the label change was newsworthy enough to earn the headline ‘FDA Warns on Increased Death Risk with Pfizer Antibiotic’ It is a shame that journalists continue to insist on publishing sensationalistic and often times inaccurate scientific headlines. While it may garner some additional readers, it does little to instill American confidence in our public health system.

CEO Finally Admits that Genzyme is Up for Sale...At the Right Price!

The Boston Globe reported today that this morning Henri Termeer, the embattled CEO of Cambridge, MA based Genzyme acknowledged for the first time that company was indeed up for sale. However, he was quick to point out that the $69 per share or $18.8 billion takeover bid from Sanofi Aventis was insufficient.

Over the past few days, Sanofi Aventis’ CEO Christopher A. Viehbacher turned up the heat on Termeer; forcing him to possibly take Sanofi’s latest offer directly to Genzyme shareholders. While Termeer acknowledged that the company was for sale, he hinted that other companies may join the bidding war to get the $75 per share price that the Genzyme board is seeking. 

The Sanofi Aventis-Genzyme situation is beginning to resemble the Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS)-ImClone standoff of two years ago. As you may recall, Jim Cornelius—BMS CEO at the time—publicly and repeatedly offered a “low-ball” price ($62 per share) to purchase ImClone despite admonishments from Carl Icahn, ImClone’s Chairman. As negotiations stalled, Icahn told Cornelius that there were other suitors who were willing to pay a higher price to acquire ImClone. Surprisingly, rather than continuing to negotiate in good faith, Cornelius decided to call Icahn’s “bluff.” In less than a week, Eli Lilly purchased ImClone for $70 per share ($6.5 billion); the price that Ichan had previously and publicly asked for to purchase the company.

Many of you already know that Icahn holds a substantial minority Genzyme stock position and is represented by two current Genzyme board members. That said, if I were Sanofi’s Viehbacher, I would proceed with extreme caution in future negotiations. Like him or not, Icahn is a financial genius and second-to-none negotiating M&A deals. 

Maybe Viehbacher ought to contact Cornelius for advice? Oh yeah...Cornelius retired as CEO earlier this year but he is still Chairman of the BMS Board of Directors. Maybe it is worth a call?

Good News for Jobseekers (sort of): Pharma Job Losses Slow in August

The Pharmalot Blog reported today that a survey conducted by the outsourcing firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas shows that only 200 pharmaceutical employees lost jobs in August. This compared with the 2,023 jobs lost in July, 830 in June and the 6,943 in May. According to the post, this year’s job loss tally is 37,265 as compared with 53,004 in 2009.  Since 2007, it has been estimated that over 180,000 life sciences employees have lost their jobs.

While the slowing layoffs are encouraging, there are no signs that companies are going to be hiring in 2011 (unless you are willing to relocate to Asia). Further, while layoffs are slowing a big pharma companies, the number of scientists losing their jobs at biotechnology companies because of insufficient capital or merger and acquisition activities remains steady and will likely increase if Sanofi-Aventis purchases Genzyme and other biotechnology companies are purchased. For example, Pfizer announced today that it was purchasing FoldRx for an undisclosed amount. FoldRx’s pipeline contains preclinical and clinical candidates for investigational new drugs that treat diseases caused by protein misfolding. The acquisition is consistent with Pfizer’s intention to move into the orphan drug market.

From an historical perspective, the early 2000s was the golden age for life sciences employees in most Western countries. Unfortunately, the golden age has ended for Western employees and it appears that a new era for pharmaceutical and biotechnology employees is beginning in the Asia, South America and Africa!

Job Interviewing Etiquette

Jena Ellis who works over at onlinecertificateprograms.org sent me a well written treatise on interviewing etiquette. While I have made similar recommendations in the past, the post entitled “Top 10 Interview Etiquette Tips” adds a few tips that I didn’t mention in earlier posts.

I highly recommend that folks preparing for a face-to-face job interview read this before their interviews! As most seasoned jobseekers will tell you, it is the little things during the interview like handshakes, eye contact, politeness etc that can make a difference between a job offer or not!

Top 10 Interview Etiquette Tips

Interviews are similar to first dates – intimate, intimidating and generally uncomfortable. Even some of the most confident, smooth-talking people get sweaty palms and tongue-tied during interviews. Nerves are one thing, but tardiness, bad manners and distracting behavior are completely avoidable. Just like it’s rude to put your elbows on the dinner table and swear in front of a lady, the same kind of etiquette should be followed during an interview. In order to make the best possible impression and let your qualities shine through, you’ll want to follow these top 10 interview etiquette tips to seal the deal: 

1.  Be early

Arriving 10-15 minutes before your interview demonstrates punctuality and responsibility. It also shows that you take the interview seriously and value the interviewer’s time. Being early is always better than being late, but be sure to give the interviewer enough time to prepare and don’t catch them off guard with your presence.

2.  Use a firm handshake

A handshake is commonplace before and after an interview. Shaking the hand of you interviewer is both polite and respectful, but it also shows confidence and openness to the interviewer. With that being said, a flimsy, weak handshake can send the wrong message and make you seem nervous or unprepared. If you’re worried about the grip, strength and overall feel of your handshake, practice beforehand with a friend or family member who can adjust your shake.

3.  Dress accordingly

Dressing for an interview can be tricky if you don’t know what the normal dress is for employees and really depends on the company, occupation and formality of the interview. To be on the safe side, it’s advised that you wear semi-formal business attire because it’s better to be a little overdressed than underdressed in an interview. As a rule of thumb, you shouldn’t wear jeans, flip flops or any other casual wear to an interview, unless noted. In addition, avoid distracting clothes, jewelry, hairstyles or makeup that will detract from you and your job qualities.

4.  Turn off your cell phone

If your cell phone goes off in the middle of an interview, you can pretty much kiss the job goodbye. Not only is this incredibly rude, but it may ruin what could have been a good interview. Even if you say you’re waiting on an emergency call and try to sugarcoat it, the interviewer may not approve and you could lose a potential job offer. When in doubt, always silence or turn off your cell phone – you can survive without it for 30 minutes.

5.  Make good eye contact

Eye contact is one of the most basic and telling nonverbal communication signals that take place in an interview. Making good eye contact with the interviewer shows your attentiveness and interest in the conversation taking place. Whereas, wandering eyes or poor eye contact make you seem disinterested or uncomfortable in what is being talked about.

6.  Tone down your nervous habits

You may pop your knuckles, twirl your hair and bite your nails when you’re nervous, but these fidgety gestures can be overly distracting in an interview. You don’t want the focus to be taken off of you and directed towards your bitten pen or shaking leg. To ease your nerves, take deep breaths and relax your body so you won’t feel anxious and revert back to your bad habits.

7.  Don’t chew gum

Bottom line – chewing gum during an interview is unprofessional and shouldn’t be done. If you’re chewing loudly, smacking your gum and blowing bubbles, that’s all the interviewer will be able to focus on because it’s incredibly distracting and bothersome in a serious scenario. If you need to freshen your breath, have a mint or use mouthwash before the interview.

8.  Say your please and thank yous

Good manners are always a plus in an interview. If the secretary or interviewer asks if you want a drink, always respond with a please and thank you. When the interview is over, be sure to thank the interviewer for his or her time and giving you the opportunity to interview. You can never say thank you enough.

9.  Think before you speak

Even if the interview is relaxed and takes a humorous turn, don’t slip up by telling jokes, talking about religion or politics or using profanity during an interview. You may be tempted to impress or say something memorable, but it’s best to act professionally the entire time and think before you speak. You don’t want an offensive joke to be the only thing they remember from your interview and risk losing a great job opportunity.

10.  Send a thank-you notes

Immediately following the interview, you should send a handwritten thank-you card or e-mail to show your gratitude. Not only is this a polite thing to do, but it also gives you an opportunity to remind the interviewer of who you, what position you’re interested in and what you talked about during the interview. This will help you stand out in their memory and possibly give you a leg up in the job standing.

Navigating a Difficult Job Market

We are now three years into one of the worst economic downturns in the history of the US. While the job market will eventually recover, don’t expect things to be the “way they were” before the recession. In other words, the job market has undergone a paradigm shift and new job seeking rules have replaced the old ones.

To that end, I recently found an article written by Liz Wogemuth of US News and World report entitled “5 Strategies for Surviving the ‘New Normal’ Job Market.” The post is well crafted and offer fresh insights into the new rules and behaviors that ought to help guide job seekers for the foreseeable future.

They are: 

1.  Be patient

These days, companies are slower to invest and slower to hire. Even rockstar employees will have to work harder to convince companies to bankroll ambitious projects. "For those people who do have the big idea, [return on investment] is going to be absolutely critical," says Brad Karsh, president of JB Training Solutions, a management and business skills training firm. Given their extreme uncertainty about the near future, companies will likely be more amenable to making an investment that pays off in seven months than one that pays off in seven years.

Most companies are also no longer doling out annual raises or annual promotions, which mean workers, need to be patient about advancement in earnings and position. One thing that's slowing down the process: Upper executives aren't moving around as much as they used to. "It used to be you'd lose 25 percent of your [vice presidents] every year, let's say, because they'd go to other companies or start their own," Karsh says. "Well, more people are like, 'I don't want to leave.'" Even top employees are turning down offers from outside companies because they fear taking a risk on a new employer in such an uncertain economy, Karsh says.

Workers who are on the market should be prepared for a longer interview process. Companies are increasingly asking candidates to interview with multiple people at the company and asking them to return for multiple rounds of interviews. "One thing I tell people is, 'don’t take this personally,'" Karsh says. "It's just a function of the economy." Even though the process can be grueling and frustrating, it's critical that job seekers stay fresh and enthusiastic--still smiling and prepared with questions at the eighth interview. Some may be frustrated with companies that can't make a decision, perhaps feeling that the company is giving them the runaround. Employers need to be forthright with candidates about their plans, capabilities, and timetable, Karsh says.

2.  In your job search, take the time to tailor

Some job seekers are applying to hundreds of jobs, but if inundated hiring managers can't easily spot the relevance of your experience to the position they're filling, they'll breeze right past. Career expert Ellen Gordon Reeves often speaks to groups of job seekers and says she is still finding that many people are not presenting themselves well--making no effort to tailor their resumes and cover letters to the jobs they are applying to. "Everybody fears rejection, so they don't really pitch themselves," Reeves says. Her advice: Put yourself in the hiring manager's shoes. Imagine what you would think of your resume if you were hiring for this position. Would the job experience listed look relevant to you? If not, spend some time recasting your work history and your skills. "Write for the job you want, not the jobs you've had," Reeves says. If you're doing this well, with your resume and cover letter, it should take at least a day (if not more) to apply for a single position. But it's so much more effective than blindly submitting your resume that it's worth the time it takes.

3.  Leverage your relationships to find openings 

Unfortunately, many job openings are impossible to find with your computer. Companies are skipping posting openings online so they can fill positions without scavenging through the onslaught of (often ill-matched) resumes. A new survey from ExecuNet found that companies and executive search firms are posting fewer executive position openings online this year. Firms said that only 22 percent of positions paying $200,000 or more are being posted on job boards or websites, compared with 30 percent in 2008 and 24 percent last year. In a different survey of recruiters, 92 percent reported that they believe in a "hidden market" for executive positions. Recruiters are relying more on their networks, as well as searching internal databases and doing their own research.

4.  Look to add value constantly 

As an employee, whether you're bringing in new money or you're saving money, you need to be adding value monetarily, Karsh says. "If you work in sales and you can say, 'I increased my client list by 25 percent, I increased my sales by 50 percent,' that's the sort of thing that employers are looking for right now--anything that can affect the bottom line," Karsh says. "If you're not in sales, you can affect it by saving the company money." Find savings opportunities by refining a process, or even suggesting a cheaper way to, say, buy or use office supplies. One tip: Put your suggestions in an E-mail so you are sure to get credit for them. 

5.  Find fresh advice 

There are a lot of people in the world offering career advice better suited for the job market of the previous decade. In this markedly different economy, old advice may very well cause damage. Sometimes the changes are minor, but they can make you look out of touch. For example, adding the line "References available upon request" can make your resume or cover letter look out of date. "It goes without saying that your references are available upon request," says management consultant and U.S. News contributor Alison Green. "It would be really odd if they were not."
