NYC BioBuzz: Social Media and Healthcare Meeting on July 23, 2009

BioJobBlog and BioCrowd along with the Business Development Institute, the Journal of Communication in Healthcare and others are co-sponsoring a meeting entitled “Social Media and Healthcare” that will be held on July 23, 2009 in NYC at the Graduate Center of The City University of NY (365 Fifth Avenue at 34th Street). Topics that will be covered include:

  3. Why real-time social media tools like Twitter are gaining momentum and when it makes sense to use them

The meeting’s agenda features case study presentations and a series of roundtable discussions on social media topics. The World's Best Places For Small Businesses

 

Each year the World Bank compiles a report that assesses the world’s friendliest business climates for small companies. The top three companies on this year’s list, Singapore, New Zealand and the US have been there four years in a row. The real shocker this year was that several previously lagging nations moved up on the list, mostly because of business-friendly reforms. This year’s most improved nation is Azerbaijan, which moved up 64 spots to a overall ranking of 33rd because it reduced the time required to start a new business from 122 to 16 days, reforming its civil code and creating an online tax filing system.

Singapore has habitually been number one on the list because of its low import and export costs, strong government-imposed legal protections for investors and lopsided, employer-friendly labor regulations. The US placed high on the list because its labor laws are among the least rigid in the world and because business can be started quickly with a minimum amount of “red tape”.

July 2008--Around the Web

This month Kevin has reviewed an eclectic bunch of websites. Continuing with his “down under” theme from last month, Kevin offers the Australian National Herbarium and the Darwin Correspondience Project websites (okay so Darwin was English but he did visit Australia!). The Darwin site complements an interesting site called the Origin of Life Prize (check it out).  

Another Australian website called the Sea Snake Homepage covers everything you ever wanted to know about sea snakes (and then some) but as Kevin put it may not be for everyone. There is a technical site called Microscope-Microscope.org which has some terse but valuable information on well—microscopes.

My personal favorite is the Biomedia Associates Educational Biology site. Although it is a commercial site, it is an education website and offers some valuable resources for biology teachers and students.

The 100 Best Companies to Work For in 2008

Each year Fortune publishes a list of the top 100 companies that it believes are the best to work for. A quick perusal of the 2008 list reveals that only two drug companies cracked the top 100 this year. Genentech was ranked number 3 (second place in 2007) and Astra Zeneca finished a distant 83rd. The only other big pharma company to ever make the list was Eli Lilly in 2006 which came in at number 52. I guess that in general, big pharma companies aren’t great places to work?

As Ed Silverman at Pharmalot points out, “Amgen wins the award for taking the biggest dive. The biotech ranked #39 in 2006 and #40 in 2007, but this year doesn’t rank at all.” I suspect that Amgen’s hasty exit from the list has a lot to with large job layoffs, a grossly over paid CEO, a flagging stock price and a weak pipeline. One company that I think ought to be on this year’s list is Massachusetts-based Genzyme which has a reputation for having outstanding employee development and retention programs. It made the list in 2006 (no. 51) and 2007 (no.43) but was conspicuously absent this year. Maybe things have changed at Genzyme?
